im at a loss on this one

this may be long but i want to give as much info as possible:

on friday night i was goingto my buddy justin's house and i was going up a large hill in second gear (about 3500 rpm). when i got to the top and pushed in the clutch for third the rpm never came back down from the 3500 range. then i noticed that every time i put in the clutch the rpm would rise to ver 3 grand, this was happening with the clutch in or out sitting at idle. the motor constantly wanted to run that high, even in gear. i got it ot justin's and we could not figure this thing out at all. this is what we ahve done/checked: cleaned the carb, messed with the elec choke which does not work btw, messed with the idle screw, messed with the fuel/air screws, check all vacuum lines, tried to check the timing but the engine is running to fast to check it. this happened all of a sudden while going up that hill, it was not doing it 2 seconds before. right now i have the idle screw backed way out and the suel/air mix adjusted a bit to slow her down. right now it is idling at about 1500 rpm, but i think she is now on the rich side of things. we messed with this all weekend and could not figure her out, i think im gonna buy a rebuild kit for the carb and ry that. i just dont understand what happened to make it do this

You sure it isn't in the fast idle linkage for the choke?

That's what it sounds like to me.

Check to see if your throttle plate is closing- it is almost impossible for the engine to rev that high with out the carb letting in air.

Also check for vacuum leaks- that is the only other way I can think of.

Yeah, check for a vacuum leak. Spray carb cleaner around the base of the carb and intake it should sputter a bit if it sucks it in.

I'm with LWB, stuck throttle plate (stuck open), and or linkage binding.
Shaft on the throttle plate may have worn through the bushing or carb body and no longer rotates freely, getting stuck open.

Maybe a choke problem or Vac leak, but 3K revs is way high for those as the only cause. (personally I'd lose the elec choke and go to a manual, but that's personal preference)

the elc choke has not worked since i bought the jeep, it was never really cold around here so i didnt realy think about it. as far as vacuum leak i replaced the seals on the carb alo, and we looked checked all other vacuum lines and did not find any. can someone tell me all th lines that i should have and where they are supposed to go

oh yeah and the linkages are all good, i took those all aprt and cleaned them as well. the chock plate does stick open, but when i close it the rpm goe up even higher

Check the throttle plate, near the base of the carb, for sticking. This is different from the choke plate...

It does sound like a throttle plate. You should be idling without any throttle plate --only idle circuit. I'm wondering what changed all of a sudden. This is a stretch but make sure your timing didn't change (check for loose dist clamp).

I you take the thottle plate off, you will be running WOT.

The thottle plate being nearly closed is what makes the idle circuit work...

no no no --when I meant no throttle plate, I mean closed so the idle circuit works.

Hey Erik, it sounds like the throttle linkage got hung up on a heater hose. It happened to me once in a similar fashion: suddenly. Couldn't stop the thing! :D

i took the linkage completly apart from the gas pedal and all, it seems that the throttle linkage is not hung up on anything. this throttle plate you speak of, is it in the carb or outside? i know that sounds like a really stupid question..sorry

OK, I wasn't sure, as you seemed to contradict yourself in the post.

    Mondays... I'll be awake soon.

You have to look down the carb to see the throttle plate, it is at the bottom,

You might check the fly weight springs in the distributor. Maybe a spring came off or the fly weight is sticking.

It would normally be closed, it opens as you press your accelerator. So, when you floor the pedal, the throttle plate is wide open! When you're not touching the gas pedal, the throttle plate is closed (and the carb uses the idle circuit to get air/fuel to run at idle).

So open up the choke plate all the way and look way down in, past the venturis, see if you can see the throttle plates at the bottom of the carb.
If they're working correctly, you should be able to work the linkage and see if it is opening/closing, or sticking open. Check for external interference as Alan (Hippo) suggested...
    HTH!!

thanks guys, i will check with the throttle plate, if thats not it i think i might have a jet clogged or something, i will probablly get a rebuild kit and a new choke since mine is broke

Don't think you have a jet issue, as if it was clogged, the engine would starve for fuel, not idle high...

Also, basically a carb is a toilet sitting on an engine. think if it this way...
    * The tank on a tolet is the "fuel bowl" on the carb. It's only function is to hold liquid.
    * Both have a "float", which only measures how much liquid is in the tank/fuel bowl.
    * Both have a "valve assembly" that is physically connected to the float. When the liquid level is down/low, the valve assembly is unseated and allows liquid to ENTER the tank/fuel bowl.
    * Both have a "valve assembly" that allows liquid to LEAVE tank/bowl. On a carb its called the "throttle valves". When the valves are closed, no liquid leaves the tank/fuel bowl. When the acelerator is pushed/throttle plates are opened, the engine creates a vacuum and fuel is sucked out of the fuel bowl, past the throttle plates and into the intake manifold.

    My suggestion..
    1. disconnect the throttle cable from the carb throttle plates.
    2. Back off the idle adjustment screw so it isn't touching the throttle plate.
    3. WITHOUT starting the engine, look down the carb (using a flashlight) and manually open and close the throttle plates (like suggested previously). Throttle plates are spring loaded...if it doesn't "snap" back shut, you'll probably need to replace the throttle valve (bottom portion) of the carb.
    4. If step 3 looks ok, tighten the idle speed adjustment screw so the throttle plates are just open and start the engine (throttle plates still disconnected). Idle should be normal (700 rpm-ish). Manually open and close the throttle and note the rpm. If it's ok, reconnect the linkage and figure out what's binding/causing the throttle plates to be "more open" than they should be.

    Good luck!
