Installing wiper linkage- how to do it the "right way"?

This is on my 70' CJ5. Questions on the right way to install wiper linkage. Do you install the wiper shafts into the windshield frame first, then the long linkage arm? Then the short arm? What side of windshield is the side to get the linkage installed? Does the leatherete washer, go on the wiper shaft, to the windshield on the inside surface, or the outside against the windshield frame? Not sure I can do the job with my hands. (Have a fine motor skill problem)! Have no one to help! Want to try and do this though myself!!!

My wipers mount on the lower windshield frame, as does my wiper motor, but the wiper motor mounts on the outside of frame. So, any good tips, and information would be helpful! Thank's, Vance.

It's been a while.........Your frame have the two large round holes on the inside w/ plastic plugs? The linkage goes in through the hole on the drivers side. It fits through there with a slight tweak of the linkage , but not bending it, then once in it has to be flipped over to the opposite flat side. The wiper arms , then get attached while inside and then moved into position on the windshield frame...........It's hard to explain easier to do or show............what helps is to pre-assemble it on the outside so you can see how the parts go.........make sure you have those little clips that hold the parts together. Once the arms and linkage is in place then hook up the motor to that arm and stuff it back in...........Hopefully someone else will chime in and refine my description.........It's not really hard, just takes some fulling around.......Hope that helps.

Does the flat side face of the linkage face the cabin, or the outside when installed? What about the leathery washers?

I have 3 holes in the windshield frame, on the inside. One hole is more "square", the other two are round and you can see where the wiper arm pivots should go?

Yes three holes and I believe from the left ( inside the vehicle ) everything goes in hole #2.............This is an advanced fishing expedition ( Just Kidding! )........the stuff goes inside the frame and you move it around and fish it into location to put the arms on and then the clips , then move them into location into the wiper arm holes..........sorry for the explanation........like I said easy to do if you have done one before or taken one apart..........harder to explain.......lay it out on the outside and visualize how it needs to be built.

Thanks tarry99, that all makes sense! Thanks for taking the time to walk me through this. Now, what about the Leather gasket? Does that fit inside the windshield before the wiper arm, or does it go over the wiper arm shaft, then next to the windshield? Then the ring over that, that has the cutout for the key that indexes everything, and then the nut? What side of the windshield does the gasket sandwich together with everything? Hope this makes sense?

like the other posts . passenger pivot and linkage goes through hole 2nd from left . and the linkage will pivot on bottom (both). washer will go on outside . now is this a stock windshield frame or aftermarket . if aftermarket . you might have a problem with passenger side pivot . I did

I believe that gasket goes on the outside..........cause if I'm not mistaken the inside portion that comes through the frame has the key as you mentioned . the outside ring is flat........but I have improvised that many times as that is one of the number one places for it to leak.........so even a little silicon at the base inside of the threads as it comes through works to help seal it off. Not a real High tech Wiper system there..............make sure all of the joints get cleaned and lubed with some lubi-plate type grease..........like I said it is a puzzle but once you get a handle on the assembly and the rotation of the arms it all starts to makes since.

I've had good luck using o-rings instead if the leather or felt washers. I've also had good luck putting the long linkage rod in through the left side defroster vent hole in the bottom of the ws frame. It's oblong shaped and was easier for me. It also keeps from scratching the paint. Ymmv of course.

I'm getting ready to work on this topic as well. I have my 73 windshield off, took out the glass and seal, and I've got a lot of bad lip rust and some rust through on one side of the bottom. I rotary wire brushed it all and it just isn't salvageable where I think it wouldn't leak. So, ordered a new frame. Already have new glass and new frame to body seal and glass seal. I've got to get the old wiper stuff out of my original frame. Removal sounds like you have to fish it out of the holes in the frame without bending it. Any tips for getting this out easily would be great!
