I am still thinking about doing a TH 350 conversion. My question is for those that have done a conversion and felt the performance of the Jeep before and after.
Did you feel much of a difference going from a stick to the automatic? I have a slightly built odd fire V6, Dana 18, Warn OD and running 33" tires with 4.88 gears.

Not really . only change is D or R . and it will up shift faster than in a car . but what do I know went back to stick . the one thing that annoyed me the most was . you had to turn engine off . just to shift transfer case from hi to low / low to high or it would grind trying to going in

Good point on shifting the transfer case. I did not think of that.

Not a 350 but my Commandos run 400 turbos, never once had to shut the engine off to shift the transfer case.

Interesting, Ron... I have only slight initial grind from gear mesh going into 4-low whether in gear or neutral (manual trans). Never thought it would matter if using an auto. In my son's YJ with an auto I've not had to shut it off or put it in neutral to get into 4-hi/ low.

As much as I hate to admit... I like driving the auto trans YJ. I've thought about this conversion for my CJ ALOT over the past year (actually have the BOP T-350 trans), just wish there was more documented swap/ user info on this or other sites aside from the ones selling the adapters.

That's not the case with mine! The only time I have to shut off the engine to shift, is when I'm stopped, then to go from high to low it will grind. To help answer your question, I think I read some place that you will loose about 35 hp. to the rear wheels from a TH350.

My Dad put a TH350 behind his Dauntless 15 years ago. It works really well. Never had to shut the engine off to shift the transfer case. As far as performance, it's hard to say. My Dauntless was built virtually the same as his but I had a T18. We never actually raced, but I'd guess in shear acceleration they were comparable.

Just make sure you use an appropriate torque converter

That certainly proves reliability!! Any chance he may have documented the conversion with pics/ notes that could be used as a future (real world) reference for folks?
