What Did You Do To Your Jeep Today?

Discussion in 'Builds and Fabricators Forum' started by Focker, Jul 23, 2016.

  1. I added one to my 72 C20 a few years back after finding an old school Stewart Warner vacuum gauge at the Pontiac Nationals. They are nice to have to monitor gas usage as well as engine performance.

spent a couple hours trying to stretch and get a new top to fit - it isn't all that warm today so that wasn't helping. Also spent some time working on the doors trying to get them to close with the perfect latch strike and nice and even fit around the edges....not sure its possible....but hey a new top! And its black - wasn't sure I was going to like it, but I really do with the black rock sliders. But thank goodness I don't have black wheels! Off to Moab on Thurs....

    Looks great! Bestop Supertop?
The doors are always finicky to line up, and the latches....
I spent hours trying to get the striker to engage nicely. The passenger side is ok, the drivers side drove me crazy! Still not happy with it. I’ll play around with it again since I have just put the top and doors back on.

Fun fact the factory mounts are within an 1/8 of the frame rails centers. I built some bottom mounts and a body bushing worked perfectly as an insulator. Next I welded some angle to the grille and fabbed some brackets. Up top I used the factory rubber insulator, drilled through, put a 1.5 fender washer and cotter pin to secure. While in the yard I pulled the 70a relay and associated block. This thing has the factory shroud and twin fans. For $106 bucks all I need to purchase is a manual override switch and a thermostatic switch to thread into the intake. The radiator is right at 24x16. Single core but I used to cool this same engine with a smaller Volvo horizontal single core, 4 blade mech. fan and no shroud. I think it'll be fine.

Couple more. Sorry had to really crop them for upload. Not pictured I got the overflow tank from the same car. Minor issue radiator has no filler cap and 1.25 inlets/ outlets. Moroso makes an inline cap fitting that is 1.25 on one side and 1.5 on the other. Bottom Dayco makes a reducer or there are generic hoses that are 1.25 on one end and 1.5 other.

yup....bestop supertop. The previous grey top was as well. I picked the new black one up from CL...was new in opened box and seemed like the price was right. One of those I don't have to have it yet but since it's there...and I am going to need one eventually....sold the grey top to a member here so hopefully it continue provide some use for awhile longer. Clear windows are nice.

With the radiator finalized I did surgery on the headlight buckets. Largely finished up the wiring. I'm going to try and incorporate a two filament / led into the original bullet park lights to have turn signals in them. Work load slacking off, progress!

Fabricated a fan shroud for the 69. Have to pull the top radiator hose to get it in there, but ran out of time. I'll post an update once installed.

Finished up and installed fan shroud mentioned in my previous post. 3/4" gap around the fan, blades set half-way into the shroud. Now, just need to get it dirty so it blends in...

  13. Got my 230 Tornado block cleaned, primed and one coat of color over the last couple of nights.

Also went through the crankshaft and rod clearances. Found out the crankshaft that was in the engine was turned undersize 20/20 and the clearances were at the limits and the end play was excessive. The 230 I had from the 63 wagon had a standard size crankshaft and the clearances are rather nice. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words....

The "230" numbers are from a customer in our shop who had me build his 78 Cobra Mustang engine. He blew up the 302, so I built and installed a 66 289 and ran his 302 camshaft in it (the only thing that was salvageable from the 302 along with the HEI ignition). The "302" numbers he had stuck on the firewall and wanted them removed since it's a 289 now. Told him I could use them. He asked why since I own no Fords. I told him I just have the switch the 2 from the end and move it to first position and now it will work for my 230 Tornado. The Ford engine turned out great:

Would that fit on a f134? Can you post the plans(pretty please)?

Ha, was afraid someone might ask. I am quite possibly the worst about remembering to take pictures.

Admittedly, I do not know the F134's very well, but I suspect the radiators are different than the V6. Here is a description of what I did:

Measured the width of the two mounting tabs/strips on the sides of the radiator, then measured from the top of the radiator core to the outlet hose on the bottom (deduct 3/4" or so from height measurement for clearance). Also good to check height on opposite side to make sure it clears the drain valve. This should give you a finished width and height. I took these dimensions to a local fab shop and had them brake the edges to make a 1" deep pan (they should know to add an extra 2" to each dimension for the pan edges). Top and sides were folded toward the radiator, bottom edge was folded back toward the engine. I also had them sheer a 1"x48" strip. Would have done all this myself, but it requires a pan or finger brake, which I don't have. $43 out the door for material and labor. 20 ga carbon steel btw.

I then carefully measured the center of the fan to the various edges and laid it out on the pan. Added an extra 3/4" to the RADIUS of the fan (center to blade tip). Drilled a hole in the center, put a bolt in, then a piece of wire from the center bolt attached to a Sharpie to draw the circle. Every 4" or so around the circle, I left a 3/4x3/4" tab on the inside of the circle. I used a plasma cutter for the circle, cut-off wheel for the tabs. Folded the tabs back (toward the engine), then wrapped the 1" strip around the tabs and bent the ends to tie into the bottom lip of the pan. Carefully clamped and spot welded everything together.

I'll get a pic of the cut-out piece and post it tomorrow. I may have another to make, if I do I will get pics this time and do a build thread.

    Hope this helps.

    **EDIT**

Here is the piece I cut out for the fan...

Thanks a lot, TIm E! (y) Also, how did you attach it to the radiator?

The mounting strips on the sides of the radiator had three holes each. I just matched those up on the shroud and used small sheet metal screws.
