Fairlead Placement

Looking for placement guidance for Fairlead. I am mounting a Koenig 100 winch and planning on pulling from the bottom of the spool, is that right?

I am using a Hawes Fairlead and will put synthetic cable on the winch.

My calculation puts the bottom of the spool at 4.25" from the mount surface, unsure what the maximum diameter will be with the cable installed on the winch. Planning on 150' of 5/16 cable

 

Koenig "King" Winches

 

Hawse fairlead placement really depends on specific winch position.
For another thing Koenig never made any hawse type fairleads for their winches.
Only the roller type as they were intended for steel cable, not rope.
The Koenig drum is narrower than most other drums. That can be a very good thing but...
It means for instance that the Warn fairlead is 2" too wide for a Koenig drum.
Perhaps then you are you custom fabricating fairlead ?

Regardless a fairlead should be positioned so that the fairlead is centered when the rope/cable is pulled straight ahead at mid wrap.
in other words with half drum of rope and pulling straight ahead the rope does not touch the fairled guides.

Koenig 100 winches can be either bottom wrap or top wrap.
It just depends on what bronze gear was installed.
Some gears were left hand and some right.
Front winch winch Inut shaft spins CCW.

 

OK So... Let's start with the fairlead
The drum is 8" and the Hawes fairlead I have has an opening of 7 1/8. I am not going to fabricate one, so if this won't work will have to find a roller type. Should the fairlead opening match the drum?

The winch gear is marked LH and when I spin the input CCW the cable will wrap from the bottom.

The 7-1/8" fairlead is nearly ideal for your 8" wide drum.
Use a hawse type with rope and a roller type for cable.
Yes that's correct....The LH Koenig gear winds from the bottom.
In theory the bottom wind provides slight advantage during self extraction.
The narrow Koenig drum provides better spooling during sideling pulls as opposed to wide drum (Ramsey) winches.

Not mandatory depends on exact winch position. See this mock up....

Fairlead opening goes directly below the bumper.
By yes frequently the Koenig fairlead was welded directly into or onto the front bumper.
