Original Rear View Mirror On 58

I have one of those cheap plastic $10 mirrors on Willie for now so I at least have something. But eventually I would like to have an original but have no idea what they even look like. Can someone post a pic of a 50's era original. What to expect cost should be?

That's looking like what I looking for. I guess now to start the search.

 

The photo that Howard posted looks like the later 1960s type mirror and mount, from about '67-up. I think this part number is 979383.
I had a '59 that used the same mirror as my '65, and it has a steel "v" shaped mount that has a bent stiffening edge on both sides. The actual mirror is also smaller than any of those pictured. I think its is part number 977680. I see the correct ones from time to time on eBay.

Yep, best I can tell it was a option under SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

 

I'd be surprised if Jeep used that style mirror as early as 1958. My new 1973 in 1973 came with that style mirror, and in '74/75 they started using the glue-on style. Nothing wrong with that mirror style ... I think it would look fine and be appropriate to the age of the Jeep.

 

I think the mirror on the green Jeep picture came out with the switch to the curved top glass. My '67 with flat top glass and vacuum wipers has a different style of mirror. This picture I found on the internet isn't great, but you can somewhat see the style of mirror I'm talking about.

That picture of the red/red Tux shows the mirror I was describing with the "v" shaped mount. Thanks '67 CJ5A!

I'll have to double check this, I think my 66 has the style above and it has flat glass.

 

Here is a picture from www.willysjeepparts.com. I believe this is what '67 CJ5 and Keys5a are talking about. Mickeykelly this is the style they are discussing. The picture is of the backside.

 

That bracket is what I was thinking of, but the mirror itself is wider than mine. I'll take a picture in a couple days when I get home. Maybe the Tux ones were different? I always assumed they were just a chromed version of the standard one.

 

Give me a day or two and I can get a pic of my stock '57.

To my knowledge and belief this is an untouched original.
I think the single bolt is OEM, no sign it ever had two.

On my one-owner CJ5, actually built in 1956, but sold as a '57

 

My old '59 (long gone) and '65 Tux both have the same narrow mirror and mount that Pete just posted. Both of my Jeeps had the mirror mounted on the frame between the re-enforcement plate and diagonal footman loop, using two small slotted screws with nuts on the inside, and the Tux bracket and mirror were chromed, along with the fasteners.
