Koenig King Winch Drum Shield.

I seen in the old catalogs that there was a shield that went around the drum of a Koenig King winch. It protected the drum and kept the cable from jumping over the side of the drum. I would like to see what one looks like in a photo not the drawn ones in the catalogs.

 

That would be a good idea.
Loose wraps have destroyed a lot of winches.

Didn't know it was an OEM item.

I'd like to see an image too.
I've been pondering making a spring-loaded bail, like a mousetrap.

 

I was able to find a few pictures of two. It almost looks like they are attached to the winch mount and not bolted to the winch frame.

 

The last two pics is the winch off my 'ol 56 cj5, the PO added the cage after the cable jumped the spool and took out the engage/ disengage handle.

 

The cable doesn't just "jump." It is when someone powers-out, then powers in, without leaving the drivers seat.

The cable first makes a chicken's nest, then crushes the handle in a death grip. Seen it many times - including the time I did it myself.

Who owns that platform mounted electric Koenig ?
Those electric Koenig 100's are pretty rare.

I have a big old Koenig catalog but it does not show any cable gaurds being offered

 

Interesting repair, but it seems to lack the friction brake for free-spooling out.

 

Yes your correct, I was going to add a bike brakepad to it. It had 3/8" cable on it, overkill for sure, and always wanted to uncoil when ever it wanted. I recommend 5/16 cable just for that problem. I now have moved on to a Belleview winch

 

Herm has parts for those, including the brake, which has a friction material just like a clutch disc. Not sure a bike pad would work as well.

Personally, I prefer ⅜" cable for safety and durability.

 

I know this is an older thread, but I just picked up a Koenig with a drum shield. It certainly looks factory and is made from square stock. Pics below if they're useful to you.

 

The early CJ crank driven Koenig winch had a cage but mounted from the top of the roller fairlead to the back of the mount.

The image above does not look like a typical CJ mount.

 

I apparently deleted my pics of the Koenig low slung 100 I sold with the drum shield, oh, a couple years ago. But the first 2 pics by 57willys show the real deal. The mount is more or less part of the fairlead and not attached to the winch itself (far as I can recall).

I found the shield separately from the winch. It shouldn't be hard to fabricate a pretty accurate duplicate of the original, though the fairlead was unique AFAIK

 

Here are a couple of pictures of mine. It's an original that I modified to bolt on. Most of the ones I've seen were welded on as were the roller fairleads. The extra "gussets" or tabs on top are for future mounting for extra lighting.
