First Attempt With Metallic Paint

    To all,
I painted the interior sections of the body, the interior section of the fenders and the grill yesterday. All went pretty good, had a few mishaps, but they can be sanded out and repainted later. The photos were taken with my phone, so the color is a wee bit off. The fender and the grill have first a fog coat, then two more coats waiting 20 minutes between coats.

The interior body photo is the first coat.

The paint is Valspar 327 series acrylic urethane enamel single stage. As the jeep was originally painted spruce tip green, the paint store came up with Green Opal Metallic as a dead match to the original paint chip they had. They list the color as color map (E2618).

Just be careful that you get the same amount of coats on every part. On my jeep, I painted the hood and fenders separately, and about a week later. They ended up a touch darker than the rest of the body. No big deal, only noticeable at certain angles.

    Nor Cal 69,

What I doing today, is spraying the entire exterior surfaces of the body, fenders, hood, tailgate and misc outside parts. I didn't plan it this way, it is just I am new at using this kind of paint, so I thought I would break the painting down in sections per se. Right now, I am waiting for the first ghost coat to flash off, then will put the first full coat on her, then wait another 20 minutes per directions and put the final coat on her.

Thanks for the heads up on section painting,

    Frank

Could be, but I think it is really from 2 different cans of paint and somehow mixed differently or wrong, or wrong color chosen i.e. 2 different colors.

That's a solid color. Probably two different mixes of paint. Metallics are harder for us home diy guys to keep consistent.

Here is what I am talking about. While my color is empire blue, the fenders and hood are slightly darker. [IMG]

The difference is only noticeable in the shade and at certain angles.

    Here it is hardly noticeable.

Dadgum, zootin, that looks good! It's also a good color in and of itself but fits the Jeep well. Those Kaiser guys were good at picking color...or is this pre-Kaiser?

On another car it falls flat.

Supposedly (!) single-stage metallic is harder, because the wetness of the coat affects the "lay" of the flake, and changes the color. BC-CC metallic is supposed to be easier ... you lay on the color just enough to cover and the color coat goes down nearly dry. Gloss comes from the clear, which has to be heavy enough to be uniformly wet.

Also supposedly (!) it helps to put a few marbles in your pot, so you can swirl and mix the pot between passes, keeping the flake in suspension.

    Yes, looks good.

    Hellion,
It is a stock color in 66 and other years as well. I don't know if Kaiser or Willys had the color first. It has a hardner and thinner with it. The hardener I think give it the gloss. But then again, I am not a painter, just an old fireman who is retired.

    Timgr,

Thanks for the positive comments. One more coat to go in about 8 minutes, then let her dry overnight.

    To all,
The final coat is on her. Will see what see looks like in the morning and will take some photos of her. Besides the paint I listed above, the Advantage brand reducer was a slow dry urethane reducer UN1263, the hardner is a TCI products QH-1793 Super wet look acrylic enamel hardener and again the paint was Valspar 327 series acrylic urethane enamel (G) Single stage. Color was Green Opal Metallic color map(E2618). The stock rims are painted white with 235x15 m/s tires. It maybe awhile until I get her finally assembled and on the road, still have to detail out the v6 in the buick blue color, then assembly can begin. At least I hope it can begin. I painted this in my shop/garage and my previous experience with painting has been limited to flat paints, USMC Forest Green and Army Olive Drab as in the photo on the side of the message.
Thanks for all the comments and assistance,
    Frank

I shot on single stage metallic once. The differences in thickness of the film effects the color. It was not easy for me. The shots at the top look great.

with a metallic air pressure, temperature, humidity, gun distance, gun speed, amount of reducer ....and gravity, the list is endless.with a solid color there is less to change the shade .as a trained body man, my advise is paint everything on the outside at the same time and in the same orientation as they will be when assembled.if you are using more than one gallon mix them in a big bucket then split them back apart to reduce and harden, and practice makes perfect.
