One thing I do know is you can't assume they're "stock". If you measure the backing plates you should have roughly a 12" backing plate for 11" brakes.

when I measure the backing plates and they are 11'' then are the brakes 10''

Inside diameter of the drum is the relevant measurement. 10" brakes ended in 1971 for the CJs. Take the drum off and measure. Post a pic if you are unsure.

Yes if the backing plate measures 11" across they are 10" brakes.

I'm with the general consensus that 72 thru 75 had 11 inch brakes.

Those are Bendix brakes. 11" brakes were Bendix. The earlier 10" brakes are different, with links not a cable IIRC.

Look at figures 9-22 and 9-23 here. http://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/9-BrakesWheels.pdf This is the left side; the right side is the mirror image of the left.

There are left and right hand adjusters. Make sure the brakes tighten when the self-adjusters tighten. Pull on the cable and the lever will climb the star wheel. Then release, and the lever will turn the star wheel. This turning must tighten the brakes, ie the adjuster must lengthen and the shoes move apart.

The finned drums were used in '74 and '75. They'll work on a '72 or '73, which came with a plain drum.
