Both my jeeps make noise in the higher gears of low range my 67 in low range 3rd gear forget about it sounds like its eating itself. the faster you got the worse it is. My 46 isnt as bad makes a different noise more tingy like gears running dry. They are fine in high range. Would this be the intermediate shafts? If so why is it because power gets transferred to the other side rather than straight across

Whine in low range is normal ( straight cut gears). It gets louder the faster you go....

Ok that makes sence. I never dropped the pan on either one of them I may just to clean things out. I guess i should be able to feel movement in the intermediate

I would cut a dummy shaft for each transfercase that is case length or longer, not gear length. Drain oil and check for metal (big glass jar and magnet on the outside) pull driveshafts and brake backing plate.
Drive intermediate out with dummyshaft. Inspect intermediate shaft for wear. (They wear more on one side and end) if you can feel it, tear it all down and replace it with the tapered setup. Otherwise put it back together and run it with fresh 80w-90 and add something like lucus oil treatment. Mine was pronounced when between load and coast similar to a pinion I did the needles without a new gear and it is better but not satisfied since the gear is worn internally.
