    (y) Let's see the numbers from these tests. If they are good maybe it is just a head swap

Maybe I missed something.... but if the numbers are good I would just get some quality cast Aluminium valve covers.

they won't fit without more firewall modifications....all the newer aftermarket stuff is taller...

Maybe I'm the one that is missing something? With noticeable blowby I don't understand how the compression numbers could be good.

Have to use an adapter with two gaskets to get those to work - most of the aftermarket use the 'in-line' mount hole spacing....mine is the offset spacing, but it needs an oil fill (a breather hole works). The early ones like Norcal posted are probably offset holes, but would have to have an oil fill/breather hole added (and that can be an issue with the fins), and the later ones need an adapter and are too tall without cutting more of the firewall (which I am not against, but I don't know how to do it with the engine in place).

I've wondered that before myself. My car has incredible compression numbers, but with your hand over the oil fill hole, it feels like a hair dryer. I guess it doesn't take much compression loss to feel as considerable blowby.

I've never compared compression numbers and blowby, went by oil usage and smoke out of the exhaust as indicators of needing rebuild. I guess blowby is more acceptable than I originally understood.

But seriously, $100 for valve covers to fix leak on an otherwise good running engine seems better than the scope creep you're looking at.

I do like the old school finned covers with the added fill/breather hole. But I am also leaking lots of oil out of the ends of the intake so its more than just better valve covers.

I don't get any blue smoke out the exhaust, so it doesn't seem like its burning much oil. But with the draft tube, it could just be leaving the oil on the road as opposed to feeding it back into the throttle body/intake and burning it off.

Trying to learn how I might improve or update from the draft tube to a pvc valve system....this would be if an engine rebuild was in order, not as an immediate fix.

Don't forget the finned "Corvette" valve covers add at least 25hp.

I would think valve covers and redoing the intake manifold with "The Right Stuff" for the end seals would solve most of your problems. I went round and round with similar intake manifold issue son my Mustang. The cork gaskets would always squeeze out. RTV didn't work great,. Cleaning with degreaser, a big bead of The Right Stuff cured until firm on the block, and then a thin smear on the intake before it goes on. I haven't had any problems since.

Don’t forget they add 2” to the length of your cubic inches.....

All you need is a PCV valve in one valve cover, connected to manifold vacuum, and a breather cap on the other.

I did...it worked fine for a few little drives around town, but as soon as I took it on the highway for some longer, higher rpm cruising, it all failed.

    Hmmm. That is really frustrating.

I can't think of why that would be unless the bead wasn't thick enough to compress well or the surfaces still had some residual oil.

When changing from draft tube to closed PCV system, the draft tube also needs to be sealed.

I guess I assumed that was a given, but we all know what "assume" spells! ;)
