When A Half Gallon Of Coolant Comes Out The Right Side Exhaust....

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by Buildflycrash, Apr 7, 2021.

  1. i'd just run it, you'd have to worry about little bits of metal.

    gotta save compression too. :D

Its not about the looks, it about if the piston ring lands are crushed into the rings. Since its been this way for some time, ignore it.

throw the suction cup valve lapping tool away. Get a cordless drill and chuck up the valve in it while in the head. Use oil to lube the valve and guide. take some lapping compound and use the drill at slow speed reversing it a couple times to make the cut. Clean all the grit out and assemble.

We aren't running at the performance levels for those hot spots (if anything) to matter unless you are way off tune.

Lapping valves without refacing them, machining the seats, or having valve guides that aren't worn out is a waste of time. If anything it will "locate" the valve seat. If the valve seat, guide, and valve aren't concentric then the valve isn't going to seat. You need the valve and seat contact to not only prevent compression leakage but to dissipate heat, prevent valve fatigue, valve burning, and preignition. See only one spot on the valve face may contact the seat to create the ring seen from lapping. Also as the valve heats up it moves on the seat and no longer contacts the area that was lapped.

    ?

I was taught that the valve should not be allowed to make full rotation when lapping. The hand-cranked lapping tools I'm used to have a reciprocating motion.

Guys, I agree with you both.. But this engine has been destroyed once already. In a perfect world it would get a rebuild but I bet Scott just wants to have it run and be fun. I did a similar build with my old 225. I wrecked it, sucked in the nuts and washers for my air cleaner hold down. Wrecked 3 pistons and bent some valves. Also scored the cylinder. I honed the cylinders, put in 3 old con rod/ piston assemblies, got some junk valves and lapped them in, and ran it.

If your engine is garbage you have a couple options. Full rebuild, transplant of another engine or fix it to work for a bit longer. Maybe he's just going to wreck that broken engine...

I would he interested to see the main and rod clearance, is there a significant ridge?
I'm hopeful that not driving the mile kept the issues to a minimum but slap it together see how it runs. Finish out the year and plan a winter rebuild. The cost savings of doing it all now is what $100-200 and the season will be shot.

I do the drill thing when lapping valves, works great. Although I do toss a piece of fuel line on the valve stem, and use that as a "flex" joint between the drill and valve, both to make sure I don't mar anything up with the chuck on the valve stem, and to act as a cushion, if I happen to have anything bind up.

This is pretty accurate to my goals for this engine. It’s scarred and marred in all the cylinders but did run pretty well. (Did the Colorado trip last year). Hopefully get another summer out of it.

Are you saying lapping would be worse for the engine performance? I’m definitely willing to spend an hour or two on Lapping if it’s going to be a benefit.

No, it won't be, having the sealing surface of your valves be uniform will almost always categorically improve your performance. Sure, in a perfect world, you'd have the valves and seats ground, the head surfaced, and the valve guides replaced. But it's rarely a perfect world, and you're going to have a better valve seal if you lap them, which will help keep the compression ratio up, and the various gasses flowing to where they're supposed to be, when they're supposed to do it.

The vavle moves on the seat as it expands so it won't contact where you just lapped anyhow.:dhorse:

    Update.
I finally have everything back together with no leaks. I took a short ride around the neighborhood this evening. I believe the new cam and lifters made a difference in the power of this Old engine. I still have a list of things to fix and modify before the summer wheeling trips.

    Now with MT 33‘s
