New Winch To Rebuild- 8274

Over the weekend, a guy I had purchased some Coleman stuff from several months back, messaged me asking if I wanted an old "Warn stand up winch" he had for parts before he scrapped it. Well yeah! He said "it's the older style with the brake style stop, not the dog lock style". I assumed he was referring to a Belleview or early Warn and not an 8274.

So I went to grab it Saturday afternoon and lo and behold it was a complete 8274. I haven't gotten the motor apart but I think it's probably safe to assume it's junk, and the control pack I'm betting needs solenoids, but all in all, despite some water in the case the gear train all looks fine. Totally rebuildable! Totally free! Build date, March 1985.

In talking with a friend at Warn, the 8274-70 uses some oilite bushings in place of probably some older plastic ones, but the upgrade to rate it at 10k instead of 8k is putting the 6hp 9.5XP motor on it. I'm not sure if I'll do that to this one, but it's good to know.

Why can't something like that be thrown in the bed of my jeep when I look away instead of empty beer cans!?

I totally lucked out on this one. Usually all I end up with is cans too.... I suppose enough cans could be melted into a case for a winch?

I think the 9.5 motor also increased the line speed. I have not yet baptized that conversion on my 3B but am looking forward to it. My 8274 was also a freebie but I'm guessing I've got about $600 in it not counting the rope. IMO, well spent $.

I think you're right duffer. I think the line speed does increase with the higher hp motor as well. I think I still have a 100' rope somewhere, along with a brand new M8000 motor that will likely be the rebuild parts for this one to keep costs down. Unless the motor on it turns out to be rebuildable, the only cost I think I'll have on this one is small parts and maybe a solenoid pack. It may find its way onto the CJ-6 to replace the XD9000i that's on it. That XD9000i works fine, but doesn't look right on a vintage jeep.

I upgraded to the 9.5XP motor on my Frontier's 8274 a few years ago; it is definitely fast.

I cleaned it up a bit this weekend and the motor is junk like I suspected. Now I just gotta weigh the costs of upgrading vs using what I have already. Bunch of gunk in the bottom of the gear case too, may have to actually press out the top gear from the lower case so I can get the rest of the crap out of the case. Gonna try some different solvents first and see if I can find some smaller flexible brushes to get in there.

I ordered a new motor and control pack form Warn. I bought the 15K industrial winch motor #70865 and a standard control pack for it. Back ordered until sometime in January, but no big deal. Not in a hurry.
