    Hello everybody,

I'm retaking my old CJ5 project and I need to rebuild the ross steering box. I've seen some in eBay for 15/16" and 7/8" shafts.

Where, exactly, do need to measure the sector shaft on mine, so I now which one to order?

Yeah.. pretty basic question, I know... please be patient. :)

    Regards,
    Mario

You measure the smooth section that sticks out of the box just before the splines start but it's probably easier just to pull the box & remove the shaft to measure it, it has to come apart anyhow.

The thicker shafts were used on the Military M38A1 and civilian CJ5's with a factory installed V6. These boxes are a bit different from each other, if you post a good clear picture of yours we should be able to tell you what you need.

    Howard,

I just took a picture following your explanation. Should I asume that need the 7/8" rebuild kit?

    Seems likely :)

Show us a pic of the pins, if they're not worn you don't need a new shaft. Unfortunately the replacement units' pins aren't as hard as the originals & wear out fairly quickly.

As rough as that sector shaft is you will certainly need to replace the bushing as well. The bushings have to be pressed in and reamed to fit the shaft.

I would say you're right

Per Old Pappy yes replace the bushing & it will need to be opened up a bit for the sector shaft to fit- I find a brake cylinder hone works nicely.

I have used a brake hone for this before and it will work.

Is it just me or are the pins different sizes? Are they supposed to be like that?

    :(

I have a fairly fresh sector shaft in Tonk and I added power steering that takes a lot of the strain & wear off the pins but I'd still like to have one that at least approaches the original pin quality.

You cold get a cheap shaft now & it would be a fairly easy job to replace it if/when the improved units become available.

The kit from QTM is probably of good quality, as are most of what they sell.

Keep in mind the Wagons/Pickups used a Ross box too, and these had longer shafts, but may be the same diameter as the CJs.
