Cj5 Transmission Time Advice

    So I’m getting tired of no 2nd (kicks out-typical problem)

    So I’m looking for any sage advise, got-ya, don’t forgets etc

    also:

    1) can I remove transmission/transfer case from below (I have a lift) or best to remove from front w engine(I would prefer from below)

    2) it would be nice to find a rebuilt t90/w transfer case etc if anyone has a lead
    (63cj5) I’m in Rhode Island

    3) I do have a twin stick pto to add on. Those cases have been split and some repair inside.

    I imagine this gets lubrication when bolted to trans thus gaskets/seals are in order for the cases and between case/tranny or can I just use permatex ?

    4) I have an warn OD on another untested t90
    I may remove that and put it on the rebuilt unit (when I locate one) and then get the adapter to still run the shortened rear pto shaft.

    any advise on that?

    Rebuild your T-90. Its easy to do. Drop it from the bottom with transfer case all in one with a floor jack. The T-90 is a light transmission and dipole to work on. While youre at it, do the D18 intermediate shaft. Enjoy.

    Alignment studs are your friend for installation. Buy quality parts if possible. I've been into mine enough I could rebuild it again in a weekend. Biggest pain is how the transfercase isn't level or balanced. Check your pilot bushing while your in there.

    You can purchase a rebuilt T-90 from several sources, but they are not cheap. It is a very simple transmission, and a very easy unit to rebuild for a lot less money than buying a rebuilt unit.

    Were I to offer to rebuild a T-90 for someone else, which I am not interested in doing, I would charge $100 an hour for labor which would end up being around $50 since it takes only about 30 minutes to assemble one. Disassembly, inspection, and clean up takes longer than rebuilding one.

    The "untested" Warn OD needs some evaluation before you spend money on an adaptor to use it with your PTO. I can't tell you how many used OD units I have encountered that were ruined by inadequate lubrication, or improper installation. Parts are not cheap for these things, and if the planetary hub or gears are shot, it can easily cost more to rebuild than what a new unit costs.

    Yes, you can remove the transmission and transfer case from below without pulling the whole power pack.

    Yes, you should use the appropriate gaskets, along with Permatex.

    Don't know what this means "Those cases have been split and some repair inside", but it sounds bad.

    as far as the twin stick, simply that, split in half and something was “fixed” (gear or chain, I can’t remember)

    ok well, I’ll keep you updated. I would prefer rebuild units over me screwing up something atm.

    Beware of another Ebay seller which lists T90 transmissions as "OEM New in The Box" for $750. These are imports from India, and certainly not "OEM". I have one of these that came with a parts deal. The one I have works fine, but I wouldn't pay $750 for one. Just the fact they try to fool people into thinking they are "OEM" would be enough to keep me from dealing with them.

    Watch utube videos I followed metalshaper he missed a few things for sure. I pulled it apart 3 or 4 times before I got it right but definately not hard. I guess it depends how many new parts you have to replace. The new parts dont always fit so good. The main thing i missed was sealing the cluster gear shaft at the front to the bellhousing. Had to pull it out a bit to redo that.

    Yes. I've seen military jeep parts from India described as "original" but obviously that word must have different meanings to different people. Red flag.

    $874 rebuilt doesn't seem too bad in today's world - but sure makes me feel old. I recall when a T90 was $300. Harumphh. But of course I didn't have the money then either.

    I lower my trans and transfer case with a cheery picker onto a rug and pull it out from under the jeep. You can put a 5/16 eye bolt in the right rear trans cover case hole, hook on with a strap and lower it down onto the rug. It is easy and no problem, put it back in the same way. Good Luck.

    For the overdrive, http://hermtheoverdriveguy.com/ has a cheap ($45-ish) evaluation price. And I really think he could care less whether you buy his services from there on out.

    I do the same but I make a chain sling that holds the transmission transfer case in the orientation I want.

    I don’t want to take my top off so maybe an excuse to buy one of those chainfalls w the crank
    Always wanted one. (Bunch of bolting/lights etc)

    I have a T 90 with four bolt cover different balance point than yours, I like your rigging though.

    I use a cheap Harbor Freight transmission jack. Remove the arms & drill holes in it so the trans will actually bolt to it.

    I also use an old 2000 lb rated Harbor Freight transmission jack. It looks like a magnum version of their current 800 lb jack. That has an angle iron cradle and I just remove the side for the D18 drop and ratchet strap the trans/tcase to the other. That is one of the few things I have from HF that has actually stood the test of time. It has to be 3+ decades old. Taiwanese rather than chinese.
