Crack pipe alert: Nissan Z24 engine swap?

Aw, if you want to go Nissan, go whole hog and swap in a RB26DETT (2.6l twin turbo). It was the standard engine in the Skyline. Comes standard with a 5 speed transmission and all wheel drive! About 300 HP stright from Nissan. Problem is a front clip usually sells here in the US for over $3,000. I guess the intercooler might look out of place on a Jeep though.

Back to your original engine choice, would it be possible to use the Nissan tranny and either adapt a transfer case or even use the Nissan case?

Although the RB26 and even the VG30TTE are 8) , the idea is to get an old jeep to run reliably under modern highway conditions - without a large investment. The Z series engines are easy to find in my area. They can be modified inexpensively (camshaft, header, weber 32/36) to make 120-130 hp.

As far as using a Nissan transmission, they are very long. Plus the Nissan transfer case is driver side drop.

To those proposing the 2.3 and other american fours.... The 2.3 turbo would be a great motor. But rare and expensive on the gulf coast. The NA 2.3 is even in the same category as the Z series Nissan or R series Toyota. It's a boat anchor if the ones I've driven were ANY indication. For several years I wanted an Iron Duke. But have never even seen one around here.

Are you thinking of the 153 or 151 Iron Duke? The 151 is the Pontiac motor, and the 153 is the old Nova 4 banger. The 153 is a cool motor - 4/6 of a 230 inline 6.

You're in Florida - you might look around for a 181 Mercruiser boat engine. It's the same as the 153 with a bigger bore. Still available as a new crate engine for industrial or marine use.

 

Too bad your not closer I got a couple of them. Seriously watch ebay I've seen several on there lately, pretty cheap also. It would be an easy swap. Revs high enough for highway usage. might check the wrecking yards they were used in the S10 also, once again sell pretty cheap. Good luck

Just jumping in, I swear I had an old 4 wheeler mag around high school time that had a flat fender with a jap motorcycle engine in it. It was in readers rigs and was a very clean installation. Editors even commented to that effect, but at the same time were scratching there heads asking, why?

I'm not a motorcycle guy, but I know they turn some rpms. What are the power numbers?!

The years?....The square ones. What was that 82-89? Word of caution IIRC S10 had 60* bellhousing, but if you find one with a 5 spd. it was a T5, get the bellhousing it has the standard GM transmission pattern and you could use what you want then. The Duke that you find in Jeeps will have the standard chevy pattern and make it easier.

 

This would be a neat setup if you could find one. Only one I've ever seen for sale was expensive though. I guess they might be plentiful somewhere, but not where I've looked.

Once upon a time I swapped a Z22 into a Suzuki SJ-410 (baby samurai). Like a few have said the tranny is kinda long. It worked great! I raced my brothers 231 V-6 Jeep and toasted it easily. Took it to Moab a couple of times. Had 31x10.50's on it. The Z motor handled the rocks well, but what surprised me was how well it did in the sand. I could easily power up sand hills that ate my 401 powered CJ-5 for lunch. It never overheated or gave me any mechanical problems. I sold it to my brother, and he sold it after the transfer case gave up the ghost on the freeway.

Don't know if it's right to put it in a Jeep, though?? Course, half the motors that say Ford on them probably came from somewhere else anyway.

Oh yeh what is the difference between a ricer and a tuner? about the same difference between a poser Jeep and a real JEEP. Tuners do things that actually change the preformance of their cars and Ricers just make it look like they did.
Sorry guys but I will not go into a tuner motor debate just realize that is where I came from into the world of JEEPs so I have a very large respect for them.

 

That's funny about the SJ-410. We put an A15 Datsun motor in one for my dad. It was his daily driver for several years and towed it all over the place behind the motorhome. We even made it Emissions Legal in Oregon!

The 2.3 OHC motor was made for 20 years (1974-1995) and responded well to making gobs of power so this would be a better swap in my opinion.
You know with all the talk about later 4 bangers nobody has ever mentioned the Olds Quad-4, this motor made gobs of power and did it without a turbo or supercharger of any kind and did it in stock form. There is a rwd bellhousing available for it that would make it a perfect fit in a jeep with a granny geared 4 speed and a warn overdrive.

 

Weren't quad 4s front wheel drive only?
