Anybody have any tricks to remove the windshield hinge screws? Mine are in pretty bad shape & I have removed a couple with my impact driver, but the rest is a no go. I'm down to the thought of drilling all the way through the screws & use a easy out or weld a nut to them. Just wondering if there's any other tricks in the book. I've soaked them & everything, just mean I guess.

if you haven't rounded them off , heat is the best for removing stuck bolts . if heads are messed up then drill through them . are these on bottom or front of windshield frame

Try the weld a nut to them trick, it will probably snap the bolt. If that happens just drill it out and tap the hole

Pretty much all of them are messed up from the po, I'm just gonna drill them out, probably be the best bet

grind the head a little and weld a nut to it. The heat will help and you'll have a good way to grab it.

x2 on welding a nut on first. Drilling out screws is a PIA and if you can weld a nut and get them out, way much easier.

Lots of BFH impact can help, before turning them. Sometimes few attempts to tighten them with an impact driver will start things moving.

The exact right size impact bit is important, and sometimes I grind the point off a little.

Yep, I have had good luck with putting valve grinding compound on the bit before using the impact driver.

    I had a lot of problems like this and you have the solutions. You can also put some "degripoil" to help;
Welding is good. But is really rusted inside, good to put a product to help unscrewing. You can also make a hole inside with a smaller diameter and use a special tool called "tourne-à-gauche" in french ("translation is "turn to the left") so you unscrew with it.
There is a lot of ways, what is important is to take time to think about the best solution.

Maybe it is called an "extractor" because the term "turn to left" is only the handle to use a tool for example to make a hole for screw.
I have to learn the technical vocabulary, sorry I cannot help. I use all these tools but only in french!
This is an example of extractors for screws, you rotate in the opposite way of screwing. But put antirust fluid before to avoid breaking inside.

Let it set for a couple of days, worked wonders on mine.

Heat it till it turns orange give it a sec and try with the impact driver.

X2 except don't hit it right away, let it cool all the way till you can hold it. The cooling cycle lets things shrink back after the heating expansion cycle, this breaks the rust loose. Try it too soon and the threads may gall and seize.

  15. I don't remember how my cj5 is for sure but my cj2a has a small flat metal plate that those screws are threaded into that is about 2 inches long. if the cj5 takes that little plate also, then if it were me I would probably drill out the head only on the screw until just the head breaks off for both screws. then I would have the little plate in my hands where I could put it in a bench vise and either heat it with torch and use vise-grips or weld a nut to it and use a ratchet.

if it was mine, and if it did have that little threaded 2 inch plate on the back. I had to do that on my cj2a recently but like I said I don't remember if the cj5 uses that plate or weld nuts or what.

Hmm, need to talk Blevisay into a ECJ5 quantity discount, being it comes from the same neighborhood as he does.....

Agree on the risk of galling. But use some oil while it is still warm, and it will suck right in.

If you take the path of heating to near glowing red, have a birthday candle (paraffin) to melt over the screw. The heat sucks the paraffin in to the smallest crevices and works better than any other "tricks" I have ever used. It works best if there has never been any oils used previously. Try this one, I didn't believe it until it got out an impossible oil galley plug in an engine block a few years ago.
By the way, has anyone got a source for these #4 phillips countersunk fine threads, with the serrated locking heads?
They were also used on Willys wagon/pickup door hinges.

These folks are where I would start searching---unless someone comes up with a Jeep specific vendor who has them. http://www.fastenal.com/web/home
