Fhead Starter Bendix

    Looks about right to me. Check the tooth count.

    If your old starter is still good, you can buy the Bendix for it. I did and it is not hard to replace. While you have the starter torn apart, you can clean it out with compressed air, check the brushes and the commutator and repair or replace as needed. The Bendix was only around 30 or 40 bucks. Then you would have an extra starter on hand.

    My problem was that an aftermarket ignition switch stuck in between the START/RUN positions and kept my starter engaged with the flywheel ring gear. Burned up the bushings in the old starter. Given the gear ratio between the two, the starter must have been spinning over 10,000 rpm. Bushings weren't made for that.

    BTW, the new starter came with the start solenoid mounted on the starter, so the solenoid on the wheel well was not needed. You may have to do some re-wiring if your solenoid is on the wheel well. Not hard to do. If you need help, contact me at c.hancey@comcast.net .

    Disregard the last part of the message above. I thought your pix was of the starter that went south, not the replacement starter. My bad...

    I am a nubie and am starting to learn a ton on my 57 CJ5 (starter is a MCH6207)

    The gear on my bendix shattered the other day, so I tore off the starter and am figuring out what to do next. The bendix obviously need to be replaced. I was able to find 7 of the 9 shattered cogs off the bendix with sticking a magnet into the bell housing, but can't get find the last 2. Will they be an issue if they just remain in the bottom on the bell housing? Also, I have no experience knowing whether the brushes, etc. are good/worn/bad. It always started easy until this bendix gear broke. See pics. If anyone can provide guidance on the above that would great. Also...whats the purpose of this yellow tape? It was underneath a clamp band on the backend of the starter.

    There is also a replacement starter from a Toyota (Land Cruiser?) that will work - that may be a suitable solution if your existing starter is in poor condition. No experience with this - I just recall it from earlier posts. Search, or maybe somebody with better info will comment.

    Those pieces should be fine. They are heavy enough and if its like mine there is some oily, greasy stuff that they would stick to anyways:D

    I ended up puting a new bendix on and was good. For what its worth get a rollpin from your local hardware for it. The one that came with my bendix sheared after the first start

    You can try to get a magnet tool into the bellhousing by loosening the dust shield.
    I was able to retrieve some scary-looking chunks of the bendix gear that way. Would have hated it if they'd damaged the ring gear.

    Was able to loosen the dust cover the get the remaining gear chunks. Took the whole thing to a local auto-electric shop, had it gone over, cleaned up and a new bendix for $110. Putting it back on tomorrow. Thanks

    At least your starter didn't end up like mine. The bendix didn't disengage, so it was spinning with the engine at a hugely stepped up ratio. If the engine was doing 2000 rpm or more, I can't imagine how fast that ring gear was spinning the pinion gear on this starter. Tore it up!!! Starter.JPG
