Can anyone tell me which four speed is mounted behind the Dauntless in a early Commando? Is the T-98 or the T-18? Is it possible to convert the narrow ratio (4.0 to 1) to the Wide ratio (6.32 to 1) in either the T-98 or the T-18.
I have a T-14 with factory bellhousing behind my V-6 in my CJ2A and am try to determine if a Jeep T-18 will bolt up with no adapters. Am having big problems trying to determine what I need to accomplish this.

Was tehre ever a 4-speed in a Jeepster before 1972? I kinda doubt it. The V6 got the T-14 or TH400, I'd think.

If it happened, it would be a T-18, close ratio. Same as the comparatively rare '71 CJ with a T-18. The parts you would need to make it bolt up are very very scarce. Probably easier to use a Ford T-18, adapt it to the Buick bell and Dana 20, and adjust the crossmember and driveshaft to match. The Ford combo will be shorter overall, and better for the 2A.

If there was ever a T-98 in a Commando, it would have been behind the F134. I'd guess it never happened.

Creating a wide-ratio T-18 from a close ratio T-18 ... I don't think there's any way to do it before 1972, and only then using the transmissions that came with the 258. And then you may as well use the wide-ratio transmission that you'd get the parts from. Can't be done realistically.

    Bowbender I'm workin' on it!

This. Tim kindly directed me to Novak's website, where they explain a lot about doing these conversions. They offer Kits to do them, which may seem spendy at first, but I'm realizing are not unreasonable.
I'm in the middle of rounding up parts and doing this conversion myself.

Another comment - the T-18 conversion is a very popular topic here, and has been discussed again and again. I suggest you search old posts. You will find dozens of posts that relate to your question. Use your favorite internet search engine to do your homework - here is an example: site:earlycj5.com T-18 swap conversion - Bing

Note that you can do this conversion in a few different all-junkyard ways, but none of them are a 100% Jeep solution for the 225.
