Re. the paint & trim plate location, in the Serial Number & Vehicle ID document posted here !! See This Thread For Serial Number Or Vin Questions !! , the following appears on Page 13:

This same document also lists the paint and trim codes used during the various model years.

The above pictured CJ dates from sometime during the 1955-71 era. The "usual" location of the paint & trim plate shown seems to fairly closely match the area indicated on Ojgrsoi's photo in his post above

I can imagine there was a guy on the line with something resembling a Dymo label maker, and he had 21 seconds to punch in the paint and trim code from the build sheet, make the label, peel off the backing, and place it ever so accurately on the firewall.

Yep, and he was probably the new kid that hadn't gone through the assembly training, so he got the job where he could do the least amount of damage. Or the old guy who earned the cushy job.

Did this tag and location apply to a 63' CJ5 as well?

What type of glue or adhesive are you guys using to affix your trim tag like this one:

I have yet to put mine back in place as I'm unsure what to use for attaching it.

I think the factory used a mixture of flour and water.

Sorry Maury, I forgot to post up the 69. Clearly they had an idea as to where they would have liked them to be attached, but from the looks of my 69 and 71, they just slapped them onto the firewall with no real care at all as to positioning or location.

Just resurrecting this thread to highlight the usefulness of the forum to those of us restoring our Jeeps. I used the recommendations here to contact Robert at dataplates4U and had these new replacements made for the 64. They turned out great, thanks for the help with a source for the plates as well as proper location and adhesives.
