Carter Afb Will Not Idle Down

    A couple of years back it developed a small leak at the primary throttle shaft. I sent it in for bushing installation and following that I did a bebuild with a Jiffy kit.
    I lost the choke pivot pin (nomenclature unknown) that connects the piston to the lever inside the electric choke. I found that a smooth paper clip, cut down to length fit nicely in the tiny bore.
    Time has gone by and after doing other work on the motor this AFB is on despite several attempts I can't seem to diengage the fast idle cam, unless I manually disengage it by reaching under the air cleaner and doing so. It may be related to the repair I mentioned above but I'm dubious.
    There's no binding in the linkage that I can determine.

    Choke adjusted correctly? Is it getting power to the choke heater?

    Just guessing. I admit knowing nothing about the AFB.

    My inner mechanic had a word with me this morning before I got up, I'll bet I didn't put enough spring tension on the clockspring of the electric choke.

    No choke heater on this version of the venerable AFB. I may crack open the case and see about increasing the clockspring tension one turn during my break.

    Your AFB is in the "cold start" mode where it bi-metallic spring on the choke control is keeping the throttle shaft on the high-idle cam. Did you have 12V to the spade terminal of the heating element? Your electric heater on the choke control might not be working. If you loosen the screws and adjust it by rotating the housing, you will get it to move the bi-metallic spring off the high idle cam.
    You can swap most parts on your Carter with Edelbrock carbs that are copies of the AFB.

    I don’t see a source of voltage to the choke assembly. Only wire is going to ground through the carb body. You need to supply ignition switched voltage on the second terminal of the choke housing. If the clock spring is wound tighter, it would delay the choke opening and stay on the fast idle cam longer.

    After getting into it more closely I finally found that the throttle return springs were rubbing on the cam of the kickdown slowing/prohibiting it's motion. Going to try to find offset throttle return springs.
