Can A Rear Pto Hub Be "straightened"?

Recently acquired a CJ2a with a rear pto and belt pulley hub. When we got the jeep started we ran the pto for a bit and there was a noticeable wobble at the belt pulley. Turning it by hand and using only my eyeballs (no dial indicator) it looks like the wobble is at the pulley, not a bent shaft, although I could be wrong. The difference in the runout, looking at the inside edge and then outside edge of the pulley seems to be about the same, maybe 3/8"s of an inch. If the pulley was bent at the hub somehow, can a machine shop straighten it?

Tread very carefully. Better to have a really cool static display then to have a broken paperweight. Is there enough material to clean it up on a lathe?

Don't know yet. Haven't even knocked the grease and grime off. Was hoping to look at brakes today.

I know nothing about these hubs but I am curious. Are these hubs machined steel or cast iron?

I am actually not sure. It is so dirty and rusty and I only looked at a for a few minutes. I am leaning toward cast from what I did see.

Cast doesn't bend very well...that may help determine the material or source of wobble.

Get it clean before you go nuts. It might be something really simple, if you look.

The drum is cast iron, not sure how to straighten a bent mounting flange on the drum, bet it would have to be heated and massaged back into shape. Much study and recommendations needed here. Hitup the other jeep forums and old tractor forums and see what they recommend. Bet the PO backed into something

Me, I'd locate a replacement before I got out the BFH.

Generic belt pulleys ought to be common enough.

Or maybe get the OD re-turned??? Do it in place with a belt sander!:sneak:

I know guys have straightened pulleys and flywheels on stationary engines.

Before doing anything, get a dial indicator and determine exactly what is bent. If its the shaft, that is easy to straighten on a press.

No "spokes" on this one. Six holes in the wheel portion which I think (based on very little google information) means it was possibly a Willys part as opposed to a generic tractor part. I guess it would help if I loaded a picture or two.

Obviously this doesn't show the wobble, but at least people will know what the parts are that I am dealing with.

I'd pull that thing off and verify that it's the hub that's bent and not the shaft. I'm having a hard time believing the hub would bend without breaking.

I believe it would be the shaft also. Dollars to donuts it’s the shaft itself.

Also, the tires in the back of the Jeep are cool.

Yeah, they are. The Jeep came with five original rims that were pulled off in the 80's in favor of the ones that are on it in the picture. The tire in the back with the "V" tread pattern is a Goodyear Hi Miler.
I hope you guys are right. I think that would be an easier repair.

I would measure the runout first and post it here and then pull it off to see if the shaft it bent.
