Hearing Strange Noise From Engine Compartment

Glenn, I decided to do the mechanics of the tranny/TC earlier than expected. It was on the list to have my tranny guy go thru it, replace seals, gaskets, etc, and make sure all is good. While I have not been having any shifting or grinding issues, other than the occasional double clutch whic is expected, since I'm planning on keeping for rest of my life, I want a known commodity. Spend the $500 now or in 6 months doesn't really matter, but this way I find or eliminate that part. So I dropped it off yesterday and should have it back in 7-10 days, depending on his work load. At that point, if he doesn't find anything, I'm going to drive it until I hears it then get out and crawl around while its running. Eventually I'll find it. Just a question of when. I'm a persistent sob. Thanks for checking back.

Stopped by today and he said the throw out had seen better days and that might well have been the noise I have been hearing. Fingers crossed.

Update on this mystery. Got Willie back fron the tranny/TC refresh. He said insides look fine but did need a replace on the TO and input bearings. But it did not solve the mystery knocking sound. So first thing Monday I'm getting it all warmed up and going back to the engine guy.

Not hearing it until the engine is warmed up is baffling. Add to that only at a certain rpm range?

Yep, but getting louder. I just can't help but believe it's the engine. I did find a gas line that was rattling against the body where it crosses that area under the floor pan, so I cut a piece of hose to use as an insulator. When driving and I go to either clutch in or neutral, and engine goes down there is no noise while coasting, so that rules out a lot. But now I while coasting I can rev engine a little and get it to happen, which is why I'm leaning towards engine. Right now I'm running with the shifter covers off to try and isolate it. It's a process. But frustrating as we were to pull it to the cabin the day after Christmas.

In listening to the video it doesn't sound like a hard knock right? More of a scraping type sound maybe?

Not really a hard knocking as much as a raddle. At first I thought it might be the engine raddling against something but I've looked at every thing and don't find any rub marks or anything. I was crazy before, but this is driving me bonkers. But it's the kind of noise you just ignore.

    Piston skirt slap? Wrist pins?

Have you stethoscoped the block when idling? A wooden dowel works great, can reveal internal noises you may not be hearing otherwise.

The engine guy will be there til noon tomorrow so I'm gonna try my best to get it over to him by them.

Hopefully whatever is going on is figured out or at least pinpointed tomorrow.

Quick update. He agrees not something we just want to ignore. He's going to have me take it to a place that has a lift where he can, at his expense per him, pull the pan and go from there. So not taking it to the cabin for now. After the first, I will get with him to set a date.

So apparently he heard the noise then?

Yes. But I got up and drive it around here to get it all warmed up, then after towing it to his place, I drove it a few miles to get it back up to temp. Plus it's getting louder over the past 300 miles since the rebuild.

I've been up at our mountain cabin skiing and teaching both the 3 1/2 year old grand boys their first skiing lessons. I head home next week and the rebuilder has it set for me to take it to a friend of his shop with a lift to pull the pan and go from there. I asked him what the cost of that was going to be and he said it didn't matter since it was on him, which was a great sign. So when I get back, I drop it off and we go from there. It's been like withdrawal not being able to drive it. Haven't even started it up since day after Christmas. It's killing me.

I didn't realize you were still at the cabin, you must be having a blast up there. :coffee::) It's going to be interesting to hear what he finds wrong with the engine. Hopefully it will be a simple fix.

You and me both. Wife and I are skiers and at 62, well there are only so many ski seasons left. I got back home today to drop off the local grandson but wife stayed up there (although she is now second guessing her decision of being up there for a week to 10 days without transportation). The week+ home is primarily to deal with the jeep and some business programming (can't seem to get work done in the mountains with the temptations of the slopes). If the jeeps ready, I'll drag it up there with me, but if not, the snow only lasts so long! I drop it off in the morning, then wait starts.

Well the wait game continues.....I took it over this morning but he will try to get it on a lift in between, but otherwise he is looking a a couple weeks.

Seems kind of odd that the engine guy doesn't have a lift, but I guess he only does engines that are brought in already pulled?

Yep. They do a ton of them. But he does not pull or install them. Set up a complete engine machine shop only. He does everything from race to hotrod to everyday to commercial, etc. Always interesting to see his backlog. But he is the local area 'go to' guy for rebuild. 30 years of experience so we will see where this comes out. The delays are just getting annoying.
