No sure how many of you subscribe to The Dispatcher magazine, but it has a article on the limited production 1969 CJ5 model 462 (4-wheel drive, 6 cylinder, 2 passenger) written by Jim Allen. The 462 predated the 1970 Renegade model and was marketed as more trail-ready CJ5. Great read.

    The Dispatcher
(The Dispatcher Magazine and Holy Toledo Calendars) isn't available online, but is always full of interesting articles and well worth the money. As a disclaimer, I've published in the magazine, but have no other affiliation.

    Hi Barry,

Thanks for the plug. This is the most comprehensive piece ever written on the 462s and includes some survivors to prove they really were built.

It's very nice article. Much of my confusion about the 462 and the Ren I has been cleared up I think. Kudos to the author.

I came across and started to buy a CJ-5 a few years back.
I determined it was built in Sept of 1969 and had all the makings of a very early Ren I excepting the hood stripes.
I guessed that the hood stripes were removed at some point.
I estimate that it to be the earliest known Renegade I survivor.
The seller lost the title and so I lost interest.
A fellow here in middle of Missouri ended up buying it.
By September of 1969 the 462's and the earliest Renegade I 's are rather hard to determine.

1969 "462"s did not have hood stripes. Was the color President Red, because thats the only color they came in. I own 3 "462"s and one is written about in the Dispatcher article. I have documented 14 over the past 15 years and one is for sale in Missouri on CL.

From the serial #'s collected so far they range from 8305 017 359351 - 360056. They were built from late May to late June.

Yes I estimated that the September 1969 was a Renegade I.
I was able to determine that only because the original color was orange.
The owner started to "FIX IT" by doing a spring over and he soon lost interest.
He simply had no idea what he had. The earliest known surviving Ren I.
I certainly would have been the proud owner of it had the kid not lost the title to it.
Was in excellent shape because it had a full Meyers hard cab on it.
Anyway its got a good home now where its at.
