Fuel Return Line And Few Other Things

Discussion in 'Intermediate CJ-5/6/7/8' started by Tree cutter 08, Apr 13, 2019.

  1. Trying to finish this project up in the next few weeks. When I got the jeep it wasn't running. Pulled the motor to rebuild and everything is new or rebuilt going back in. Installed a edelbrock 4 barrel in intake. Do I need a fuel return line? If so how do I go about running it back? Fixing to order a dui distributor. Read somewhere about those style eating cam gears but it may have been the cheap Chinese model. Any experience of opinions on these? It's about 300 bucks but simple and clean install. I'll try to get a pic of the alternator tommrow. Got a few questions on how to wire it up. Thanks for the help, this site is great!

Some of the gears did eat cams is this a 304? The Delhi points distributor uses the same gear as an hei if you have the old gear put it on the new hei unit. No return on my 304

Later "dimpled" gears for both window cap point, type and early HEI distributors. The dimple has two functions. First, the dimple is a balancing hole to balance the gear in its rotation. Second, the reason for the balancing and dimple, to adjust for the rotor firing bar weight on the distributor rotor. To install the gear in its correct position, the dimple should be aligned with the firing bar tip on the rotor.
Not all GM dist driven gears had the dimple.

Some of the CJs have a return line - my current '75 does and both of my previous California Jeeps ('73 304 and '75 258) did. It would be helpful to put your year, model and equipment in your sig, then it's always present in your posts.

I would not change distributors unliess I owned a '75-77 with the troublesome Prestolite BID ignition. Again, we need more info to answer your question. Davis is a reputable seller and are likely using a proper distributor gear. There have been instances of aftermarket HEI distributors destroying the cam and distributor gear.

  5. Yes mine is a 75 and and remember seeing prestolite on something. Thanks for the advice on the distributor. Here's a pic of the alternator. The wiring harness was rigged so bad over the years I just cut everything out and replaced it.

  6. I not sure but I think the volatge regulator was mounted to the pass fender. Had 4 wires to it. Is it possible to to get another alternator with internal volatage regulator to simplify wiring?

232/258 Jeeps in 1975 came with a 10SI Delco alternator. All Jeeps used Delcos by 1979 (maybe '78?). As mentioned, these alternators (10SI/12SI) have an internal regulator. They are commonly swapped in. Just follow the 6-cylinder case on your factory wiring diagram and adjust the brackets.

  9. Thanks guys, ordered one this evening. Chomping at the bit to get this thing running. Maybe have it going by this weekend to break the engine in.

Motorola 8AL - it's described in the TSM (picture above is from the '75 TSM). Good to replace it with a 10SI.

  11. How would you recommend tying in the return line? The carb only has a fuel inlet line. Seen a pic of a return line running from the top of a fuel filter. Is that the correct setup?

If it had one yes the filter has the nipple for the return line.

  13. I may see if I can find one. Thanks

It's a good lick ditching the Crapola Alt.. I did mine after going through 2 volt regs and the alt wouldn't run around water.. I used a 3 wire Delco alt. Many like the one wire for simplicity of wiring.

Yes.. Wiring is a bit harder to sort, but bein as I am an electrician I figured it out. Mine is a CS 130 I believe..

  18. This is what they give me. It's suppose to have a built in regulator. But there's a sticker pointing to regulator. What do y'all think? I've got a alternator power wire and a alternator exciter wire coming from the harness.

Motorola 8AL, same as what you have. Uses an external regulator. Take it back and choose another parts store.

  20. That's what I was thinking. They swore it was different and had a built in regulator
