Both tags were on the firewall of my 3a.

No, the body number should be off like that. The bigger tag is the VIN tag, which is the important one.

FWIW, I've never seen a 3A ACM tag. It must be a really early '49 then to have that. All 2As had them.

It matches the bigger one, although the title says “CJ3819862” like the numbers were relayed over the phone and A sounded like 8. Hopefully that’s not going to be an issue.

Is there a frame tag? Also any stamped #'s on driver's toe board or edge of tailgate? In general I'm used to seeing the smaller tag as the vin

On my first 2a it had tags like that and the body did not match the vin number which is the larger one. My present one had a vin and a body tag, neither matched. i lost both, stamped a new title tag and stuck it on. No issues here.

I've never seen tags that don't match, (unless Bubba was involved) but I'm not all knowing when it comes to 3's . . .

See this thread. Body tag number same as Serial Number?

CJ3As only have the VIN on the tag. Early CJ2As had the vin in 3 places, the firewall vin tag, the small vin tag on the drivers side frame horn and on one of the data tags on the dash. Sometime in 1946, they went to the single data tag on the dash and did away with the vin on the dash. In 1949 with the introduction of the 3A and its redesigned and stronger frame, they did away with frame tag. Like stated in the thread, the ACM number is stamped on the toe support gusset. It is an internal serial number to keep track of the tubs.

Hopefully @Bob W sees this thread and can shed some light on the 3A ACM tag. Ted is a 49 and he doesn't have the ACM tag, just the stamping in the toe gusset.

ACM tubs stopped in 1948 so a 3A should not have a ACM number as Willys made all the 3A tubs. My 48 has the Toe board Gusset number but is a Willys tub.

I think my 49 3A has both of those tags also. Thought I had a photo but can't find it.

    To all,

If I may add to the subject.

My unrestored 1945 CJ2A has the following:

Frame Tag inside of drivers side frame horn 11809
Serial Number Tag on Firewall 11809
    Body NumberTag on Firewall 11809
    Body brace driver's side 1821
    Tailgate stamped 1821

Holy crap. My 2a #11859. Originally column shift tool indent.

    Rich,
Mine was originally pasture green, but the paint has oxidized to a rusty tan color. What color was yours originally ?
Still has the column shift. Took a bit to get used to it instead of the usual floor shift. The column shift linkage sucks when you compare the two.

Best I can tell through the paint layers pasture green as well. The hood is the only thing left though....

    Rich,

I wonder what if any spread there was to the colors, how many brown, how many green in this early run of 45 CJ 2A's.

    Thanks for the reply,

    SW Orygun,

    Rich, Frank & others,
I just hauled in early '45 harvest tan column shift to part out. All data tags missing, so serial number is unknown. I did research engine, transmission, transfer case and ACM numbers and determined serial number should be 10900 - 11000 range.

My 3b came with a CJ3A tag. :susp: The jeep itself is either a 54 or 55 vintage because the frame numbers are the last digits of the original serial number. If I had the prefix I would know for sure. If I could decode the numbers on the D25 or D44 axle tubes I might figure out its production date unless they were swapped in the past.

Well, I was rummaging around in some of my old Willys stuff and came across a pair of matching ACM and Serial tags from a CJ2A I parted many years ago, both with the same numbers stamped, same as Zootin's post#12 above. I believe it was a '47 if that helps place things.
