Hey yall - I just picked up a 1971 Renegade I in purple!. I've got AMC badges on the rear and a Aug 1970 build date. Oddly enough my VIN starts with 8305037 which seems to indicate a CA vehicle based on the decoder on page 1. Haven't seen anyone else list a 3 instead of a 1 thus far.

I am trying to decipher what year I have, Cj5, Canadian, last 6 is 358848. Titled as a 1970, but would like to know. Someone put a 302/C4 in it, but otherwise, stock.

Looks like lots of good info here. Thanks!

Your serial number is near the cusp between 1969 and 1970 model years. My guess is its actually a very late ‘69, but titled as a ‘70. This was not uncommon to title a Jeep in the year it was sold if the vehicle sat on the lot for an extended period of time.

I just bought one that’s titled as a 1970, but the vin is 8305 017 360008. According to the database, it should have been built somewhere around July or August of 1969. (Dash sticker was removed)

Has hood-mounted marker lights, 2-piece rear axle.

Model years then were just like they are now. They change over around June. 2024 models were being built in the summer of 2023.

Actually, the changeover for model years of the ‘60s and at least early ‘70s is August/September, with September being the “new” model year. Yes, when the “Big Three” brought out a new bodystyle every year, production preceded the model year by a month or two to have stock on hand for the “new” model year. With Kaiser being a small company, relatively speaking, our Jeeps had running changed throughout the production run rather than “model year”. Not all CJ’s got the same changes at the same time. For instance, the Tuxedo Park model introduced new features (like eliminating the cowl “battery lid” and single-stick transfer case for ‘64, or introducing the Dauntless V6 for ‘66) months before the regular CJ models got these features.
