Reliable Source For Winch Rope?

Does anyone have any experience with a reliable, affordable, source for synthetic winch line? I placed an order on February 2nd with a company that I found online. They immediately charged my credit card, I still have not received my rope, and they have not been real responsive to my enquiries. I am starting to get the feeling that I chose poorly and I will continue to get excuses and no product.
I am giving them another week to make it right before I cancel it and look elsewhere. In the event that they do, or do not deliver, I will share my experience to benefit others. So far, it has not been pleasant.

 

I replaced my steel cable about 6 years ago and got my synthetic from Master Pull, good stuff, but not very UV resistant and has broken the line a couple of times, but I think that I put 125 feet on my M8000 warn. If you are able all the synthetic line is the same stuff they use on sail boats, so if your real ambitious you can make your own lengths and save some $$$.

There are more options out there now than when I bought mine originally.

Not all synthetic rope line is the same as on sail boats. You did point out Masterpull that shows some differences. Viking ropes used to print out the differences also.

I didn't want to spend a HUGE amount on rope, in case I didn't like it, but honestly, having used rope instead of steel cable, I can't see ever going back.

Lighter (like 20-30lbs lighter)
just as strong, if not stronger than cable
safer - no violent snapback (as compared to cable)
cool color
if it pops, you can fairly easily resplice/rebuild the eyelet end.
easy to spot on the ground amongst weeds/underbrush
I think it even floats.

My jeep lives in a garage, so I'm not too worried about UV issues, but I'm still going to probably get a canvas/vinyl winch drum cover to protect it.

 

All true benefits. If you have ever dragged a wire rope through 3 feet of snow, well, you know. I would have gone synthetic long ago, but a trip to Johnson Valley made me pause. Every jeep in our group of 10 winched, and sometimes hard, sometimes out 200 feet to the nearest anchor, around and over rocks. We all ended up with damage to wire rope, and I didn't see how a synthetic would have survived. So I have resisted, but the idea of a floating winch line sounds great.

 

Guess the river current would be an issue then, but you can't drown swimming synthetic across a river or lake. But then when would you ever winch across a lake. I recall a boating accident in TX where the sheriffs boat capsized and the two perps drowned with more chain than they could carry...

 

Never ever had a wire rope "pop" on me, and I have used them rough.

 

I still have my fingers crossed that the 150’ of 5/16” Dynema 12 strand shows up. Fed ex showed that they had it, but the delivery date has come and gone and no scheduled delivery date is available.

 

Me neither, but just google winch cable breaking and you'll see some scary stuff. I have gotten shanked through my glove on a wire splinter. Ouchie. No thank you.

 

Agreed and I understand. But worth noting in many of the videos it is the connector or fastening letting go. The hardware not the cable is the failure point, and it also provides the projectile.

 

True, abrasion with rope is a problem. And why I add about 25 feet of ballistic nylon sheathing (aka hydraulic hose sheathing) over the rope a slide it along to cover those abrasion points. I used steel cable for 50 something years without any incidents but handling it was sometimes painful even with care and a good pair of leather gloves. I've been using rope now for 9 years and have absolutely no plans of returning to steel cable.

 

Lol...mostly thinking about stream/river crossings where a stalled motor in my rig or someone else’s is creating a stuck. Just a convenient feature if the winch line stays at the surface with you, if you happen to drop the hook.

 

It was pretty convenient when my winch line floated last July.
