Hello everyone. I have a 66 CJ5 with the V6 dauntless with fuel tank under the drivers side seat. I want to do away with it and install a fuel tank underneath behind the rear axle. Does anyone have any advice as to exact fuel tank I need and installation tips. Thanks

I would say '71-76-ish CJ5. But your '66 has the diagonal hitch braces under the bed you will have to remove.

That's the one you want, as linked above. May be able to find it cheaper if you look. I'd guess they are all being made by the same place and sold by several different vendors. You will also need a matching sending unit of course along with the filler neck parts and mounting hardware for the tank (which you could probably fab if you can't source the brackets). Someone may have a schematic of how it mounts and the related brackets. I didn't take pictures of mine.

A plastic tank for the same vintage jeep is another option. There are varying options on theses pick your poison.

I did this conversion but I also used a skid plate from a 71 worked great

    First post. Welcome from Boston.

Look here at the article from Mike Boyink found on the Wayback. Fuel Tank

This topic has been covered a lot in the past - you should search for older posts to get more information. site:earlycj5.com rear gas tank conversion - Bing If you search for old posts, you will find plenty of discussion.

Suggest you would be better off with the '78-up config that Mike uses. Several pieces needed to install the earlier style tank are not available from the aftermarket. If you go with a plastic tank, you are required to use this later design. MTS COMPANY, L.C. - Jeep CJ/YJ Gas Tanks I would prefer the plastic tank if I were converting.

That is the one I have as well. It was an easy conversion.
Notice in the Boyink build he welded the nuts to the frame. This makes it very easy to remove/reinstall the tank at a later date.

I converted my 65 to the steel tank in the link below. It bolted right in with the matching skid plate. After about 3 year, the fuel tank split at the seam. I replaced it with the plastic one from MTS. You will need to decide where you want the fill location to be and cut a hole in your tub for it. I put mine on the passenger side, about where the original spare tire carrier goes. The other option would be to put it on the back, near the tail light.

Doing good, family kid stuff is keeping me busy (soccer, Tae Kwon Do, horse riding, Disney, track, etc.). I drive the old Jeep to a Sat morning car show every once and a while. Had to do a few things to it. Need to do an update on my build thread.

I got everything to add a rear tank from Barney's Jeep. Tank, hoses, sending unit, etc.

I understand the filler neck is different between the tank up to 75 and 76+. I was originally going back and forth the day I made my order, and in the end accidentally ordered the earlier one. The earlier filler hoses/neck parts tend to be more expensive (found repros on eBay). My tank had a little extra material outside of the welded seam that had to be trimmed to fit. I used the 76+ skid plate. It needed minor trimming (not for the tank, but to fit the frame on the front half).
