If the aluminum is that porous I would be concerned about the strength of the rim.

I've had one wheel issue ever in my 35 yrs of four wheeling mostly on alloy wheels, and it was kind of a freak accident. I was climbing a gnarly hill at Rimrock here in WA with my dads 2001 TJ. I kicked a rock just right and just the right size with a front tire and it lodged itself between the wheel and caliper and punched a hole in the inner part of the left rear wheel rim. That was a forged 16" Mickey Thompson Challenger wheel. I had a local welding shop fix it because the wheel had been discontinued by then and it became the spare.
