Where To Find Parts

It's been a while since I was on the site but I need some help. I am looking for a windshield for a 1965 E CJ . Do they even exist any more ?

 

I would call your local windshield shop. I think they would cut it for you.

 

with it bieng just flat glass shouldnt be too hard. Now the gasket may be another story i dont know

 

I'm looking for the whole windshield because mine is bent from a rollover

 

Repros exist but they are not good. Rust free originals exist in the dry salt free states.

 

Does anyone know where to get a new 3/16” four-way Brake line tee?

Does anyone knows where to get the banjo fittings for the master cylinder? I am converting to a dual reservoir and would like to have banjos on it. Thanks.

 

The light socket for the charge indicator bulb in the dash is broken. I've tried making a standard snap-fit socket work but it grounds to the dash no matter how much I attempt to insulate it. I haven't found any listed with the suppliers I've searched. Anyone know where I can located one? It's for a '65 CJ5.

 

I can't be certain but it looks like it grounds through the metal housing which is what I have now. I'll have to give them a call.

 

In a pinch, most or all of us wind up at a local parts house from time to time. Or perhaps want to scrounge a popular online auction site for a deal.
Is there a decent list of common spares somewhere? Perhaps indexed against the factory part numbers?
for example a "standard parts" SLS27 is a brake light switch for most of the ECJs the SLS30 covers most of the rest...

 

The wrecking yards use the Hollander guide Hollander Interchange: The Best Tool for the Right Part

I suspect the aftermarket parts suppliers use this guide to tabulate applicability for their parts. Likely Hollander is both incomplete and contains mistakes, and transcription into the listings adds another level of error. In my experience, the aftermarket listings are most accurate when you refer to the factory parts manual and cross to the Jeep PN. You can also search discussion here about the specific parts you want. Perhaps you don't appreciate the scope of what you are suggesting ... there are many thousands of popular parts for these Jeeps.

IMO the best thing regarding parts someone could do for the community here is put the parts book that covers '55-71 or '72-73 online. The '74-80 book is available on CD-ROM from RockAuto at ca $25, so that's widely available. I expect there are several books and supplements that cover the earlier years.

(Some people have listed categories of parts that often get questions on these forums ... Dr. Bob has a CTO page http://www.drbob.tqhosting.com/tech/cto.html which I have used and found already out -of-date. Some site has a listing of AMC flywheel part numbers. You could do something similar if you see a need! )

 

I appreciate it's a lot of parts, but it's a lot less of a job than one might think since pretty much all the Jeep-specific parts would be excluded and you are left with just the generic service items, which are all you are going to find at the local parts house anyway.
Fuel pump, wheel bearings, temperature sender, etc. Even at that I know it's a big job, but there are lots of us. I know for instance the Datsun 1200 WIKI has a very complete list of parts that is invaluable when looking for a brake line, wheel bearing, or whatever.

If you consider just the eponymous CJ-5, that's three corporate parents (Willys Motors, Kaiser-Jeep, and AMC) over a course of nearly 30 years (1955-1983) with 7 different engines (forgot the Perkins!), 11 transmissions, and 3 transfer cases. And important aspects of these components changed over the decades. That's a lot to cover.

It'd be neat if we had an application that would record user's experiences with specific parts, and organize them by category. It could be even better if that app accepted search criteria and found these listings that matched the search. The main hangup - I'd think - is what to call each part. There's a lot of variation in naming, changing from community to community, and even with location. I'd suggest we could standardize by using the names Jeep applied to the parts. You already have most of that, using Google or Bing or whatever specific for this site, and refer to the Jeep factory parts book for the proper terms.

Perhaps there could be a "popular parts" forum with some kind of organization by year and equipment, with a separate category for accessory parts? Members could be encouraged to enter their experiences with PNs, suitability, durability, etc. Parts book reference would be good too, with Jeep PN and group/item number.
