Since I just got a XJ as a semi DD I'm trying to figure out insurance requirement for the CJ as a trail Jeep only. In California I have to have insurance to keep it licensed and it has to be licensed to go on most all trails here.
I will just be flat towing out to the trails where it is covered by the towing vehicle. Anybody else dealing with this issue???

Man, you just reminded me that I need to add my jeep to my policy. I'm almost ready to get it out on the trails. I suppose I will just get the minimum liability coverage. No theft coverage. (I'm in California also).

You need the liability in case you are in some kind of accident (even on the trails) where someone else gets hurt. It could be another vehicle or it could be your buddy riding with you, but without liability coverage, if you get sued, it's your assets that will be at stake. i even keep insurance on my ATVs for this reason.

May want to check with State Farm. My rep says I'm covered either on the road or on the trail. His only warning is that if they end up paying too many claims I may have a rate increase or get dropped.

I think Jp Mag did a thing awhile ago that said Farmer's Insurance has a policy that will cover you too.

I was able to insure mine for Liability Recreational use only (les then 5K miles per year) through State Farm.

I think mine is about $300 now. Everything in CA is more expensive. I will ask monday about dropping coverage to the minimum. Thanks all for the feedback. I am with Auto Club for coverage on all my stuff now and don't want to change.

I live in Ca. My Jeep sits in the garage most of the year with less than 3,000 miles either driving to trails or just around town a little. I was told to carry basic insurance all year in case it gets stolen and an accident occurs.....or when the kids get older and decide to take it for a ride. Thinking about bolting it to the garage floor.........
