    Just wondering...

Over the decades I've owned several F-heads, some with as low as 25 thousand or 30 thousand single-owner original miles, although they were old vehicles when I got them.

Every one of them has had problems with broken rings and scored cylinders, in at least one cylinder.

Is this a flaw with the original parts? Age? Am I doing something wrong?

Anyone else observed this as a problem or have any insights? Just curious.

    Can't say for sure but-

First time I had the oil pan off of Tonka about 10 years ago (Kaiser factory rebuilt engine) I found pieces of ring embedded in the glop. That was good for a few minutes worth of panic

Last fall when I pulled the head off the same engine I found a scored cylinder, this happened sometime in the last few years.

Whilst dissassembing the engine out of Maggie the other day one of the pistons popped out with- guess what- a broken ring (amongst other problems)

Could be you're on to something:)

I've had a half dozen f-heads apart and never found broken rings. Some showed wear in the cylinders, other none at all. Which rings are broken?

    "Which rings?"

Well, memory fades with time but I'd definitely say the compression rings, as opposed to the oil-control. But I'm not able to say exactly.
