Best Way To Take A T90 Out...

    Bowbender I'm workin' on it!

Pull it away from the pivot ball a little bit and slide it "sideways" off the throwout bearing. It kinda clips on the bearing with the springs (that should be) on the backside of the fork.

I took mine out by raising the front end a bit on jackstands, but a small bottlejack to support the rear of the engine, Removed all drivelines unbolted from the bellhousing. Put floorjack under the crossmember and pulled it back and down. Top cover removed.
Replacement is just the reverse except two guys, one to run the jack and the other to push and wiggle the lump. Put a piece of cardboard over the top of the transmission to keep stuff out.
Attached is a picture of the assembly ready to re install.

It seems like the bottom bolt that fastens the transfer case to the transmission goes all the way thru into the transmission oil and will leak. I found out after I filled transmission with oil.
Remove the bolt and put in a plug. Put Teflon tale on the bolt and re install. No leak.

I too prefer removing the bellhousing with the trans/tc as an assembly. Yes, is is more bulky and a bit heavier, but the jack is carrying the weight. I like the larger diameter of the bellhousing to line up to the back of the engine block, making an accurate "gauge" of the gap between the two. I can visually align the gap to make sure the bellhousing and block are very close to parallel. I sometime have used bolts with the heads cut off as alignment dowels when the trans assy doesn't stab right in.

Mine was dry as a bone but with some debris in there, like a mini rat's nest.

I'm also tracking that there's supposed to be a paper gasket between the adapter and the transmission(?).

Is there supposed to be a paper gasket here? I was just going to clean the mating surfaces and seal them with Right Stuff, or should I make a paper gasket?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    How ever you prefer.
But if the front of the transmission is not leaking, it shouldn't matter.

We think alike. I use an engine hoist with my SM465. Just went in though the passenger door opening. Set it on the floor, slid it out, and picked it up. Right into the truck for rebuild.

On my Jeep the floor comes out, I lay the windshield down, put a 5/16" eyebolt in the right rear trans cover hole, hook on with my Cherry Picker and a strap and pull it out and lower it down on a rug and slide it out, no sweat. Goes back the same way. I had a leak at the cluster shaft in the front of the case, had to remove the trans three times before I found it, I learned that you need to put sealer on the ends of the cluster shaft before you put your trans back in. Good Luck.

question would this clustershaft leak cause geta oil to come out the bottom of the bell housing? Every tome i stop i get a good sized puddle of gear oil.

when i pulled mine the trans t case and pto came off all as one.

YES, I had to try three time to find it, I pulled the trans and transfer as a unit, set it in the sun and kept an eye on it, after a while I saw a small drop of 90wt running down the front of the case, cleaned it with Brake Cleaner and put silicone in the hole and that stopped it. I would have a quarter size spot on the garage flood in the morning. Check. Smell the oil, 90 wt., stinks, It could be a rear main seal too, that is more likely your problem, my other motor had a bad main seal, motor oil would drip off the bottom of the bell housing too. Good Luck

Pulled my T90 and D18 and overdrive in one unit in a gravel parking lot at Baylor Unv. back in the 80's. (Security never saw me!) Floor jack under cross member, took out floorboard, removed shifters, clutch linkage, and drive shafts, then unbolted bellhousing from motor.Only had a couple of end wrenches , a crescant and screwdrivers and a little muscle. Pulled it back and dropped it down just to replace throwout bearing that my Dad recommended two weeks earlier. Might want to look at clutch while its out. I had had plenty of practice pulling it and reinstalling it that previous summer. 19 years old and knew everything.
