Ok, can someone set me straight..... I have a 74 cj5. I have put a new floor pan in without the tool box and also home made seat brackets. Now it's time to find a center console. I see a lot of ads for 76 and up consoles but very little for the earlier CJ's. Is there a difference in the body between these years other than the windshield and maybe frame widths? I would also like to put in a windjammer but those aren't listed for the intermediates. Is there that much difference? I would also like a security console that I can mount a radio in in. Thanks for any answers......... Lee

Best thing to do is look at the advertised measurements and mock up a fit in your Jeep before you buy. I think the Tuffy 013 Security console measures up. Of course this depends on other mods that you might have made like where the transmission and shifter are located.

Here's a link to all the Tuffy Jeep products up to '75 http://www.tuffyproducts.com/s-50-up-to-1975.aspx

Not sure about the windjammer, bit it seems to me that at the worst, there will be a gap near the floor since the intermediates don't have the roll bar that comes down the front of the wheel well. I thought about buying one for a 76+ and then taking it to a upholstering shop to trim and fit if necessary.

Oh...the CJ years change at 72-75, then 76+, the 71 and earlier are different.

The floor pans are totally different from 76-83. I'm sure a console could be modified to work, but if it's designed for a 76-83 there's no guarantee it will fit in your 74.

Thanks for the responses......I have a tad over 8" between the seats. The shifter locations weren't modified(other than the twin stick). The rest of the floor pan is pretty much open up to the shifter. I notice that some of those tuffy's have something added at the back end that looks like it might raise it up. I figured it could be cut off.....but it'd be nice to know that with just a little modification it would work. Guess I'll just have to order one close to my measurements and make it work!!:)

Thanks for the response's I knew I could count on the experts!!!!

I think you can find the installation instructions on their web site...might have some of your questions answered that way too.

FYI...if you can't find one that works for you, just visit an army-navy store and pick up an ammo can. Heavily built and easy to attach a solid lock to. I even put a can holder on mine. Worls great for those items you need to lock up and also good storage for jeep stuff.

    BTW...mine's a 75 CJ.

    here's a link to the lock kit....quality security !!

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I was hoping someone could answer this question. What is the difference between a tub and nose for a 1973 CJ5 and a 1979 CJ5?

I can buy 1973 a fiberglass tub and 1-piece tilt nose, but am afraid that it may not fit my '79.

Any advice on that? Thanks in advance.

The front clip (nose?) is the same for a '73 and '79; some minor details may be different, but that would not prevent using one on the other.

The tubs are only the same in the exterior metal. The floors, firewall, dash, and wheelhouses are quite different. There are some differences in the exterior that may or may not matter to your - no bow pockets on a '79, different "Jeep" lettering, maybe more. You can cut up a '79 or '73 tub and use the side panels, cowl and back panels to repair the other year. The rest of it is different.
