10" brake and kingpin questions

im almost ready to start reassembly of my dana 27 rebuild. all i have is a chilton manual and its more usefull leveling my workbench than giving any good info. do i need any sealant/gasket on the lower kingpin cap? will it leak if assembled dry or should i abb some RTV?

i didnt find many good pictures or much info on 10" brakes, mostly 9" or 11". i just want to know if i got every thing put together right. this is the front driver side.


there is a long and short spring at the top, what spring goes toward the front?


i dont know what this part is called but i think its for the auto adjusters. it has a "R" on it but its on the left:?. the one on the right has a "L" on it. i couldnt figure out another way to route the rods to make it work with the onr with the "L". the rods and holes are different sizes and they dont interchange as far as i can tell.


i need to get a real FSM

 

The self-adjusting mechanism is installed on the rear side of the axle center. The assembly shown in your picture shows a right side (passenger side) self-adjuster. However the primary and secondary shoes appear to be installed for the left side (drivers side). My comment about the shoes is based on the fact that the primary (leading) shoe usually has a shorter lining than the secondary shoe.

 

ok, it looks like someone switched sides with the backing plates. i just noticed that the new whell cylinders have the brake line fitting on the right side if your looking at it from the back side of the backing plate, if that made sence, dose it matter or should i get a replacement?

 

The wheel cylinders are unique from left to right. They can be swapped on the backing plates by removing two bolts. But it's probably easier to swap the other hardware.

 

i just took both sides apart and switched backing plates and hardwhare. this is still the left side, hows it look now?

both cylinders are new from napa but i didnt notice the difference untill today. i think the one im holding needs to go back, fitting is on wrong side and it looks a little different. the pics on napas site shows the the left side cylinder is correct.


i still dont know what spring is primary or secondary.

 

The shoes and self-adjusters look correct now.
I can't remember which direction way the wheel cylinder port points on the 10" brakes with the little S shaped line. It should be obvious when you assemble the backing plate to the axle. The flexible hose should fit better one way than the other. You might search for some other pictures of assembled brakes.

 

Just curious, is the strut and strut spring necessary, I don't see them in the pictures

 

These 10" brakes don't have a parking brake, which typically facilitates the need for the strut.
