Did AMC use a harmonic balancer on all it's V8's all through out their run, or just after 1974. I was looking On jegs' website and it does not list one for the V8 before 1974. I'm asking because the harmonic balancer on my 360 a, post '74 is going out. My next question is can I run my 360 without the balancer if I replaced it with an early style pully mount off of a 304, or would this completely thow the balance of the engine off?

Any thoughts or advice would be a great help.

    Thanks in advance,

    Donald

Pretty sure they all had the HB. I wouldn't run it without one that's for sure. I think it's asking for a problem.

I studied the 304 some while I was up in garage and it does have a harmonic balancer on it. I don't know why I thought it didn't have one, brain fart I guess. My question now is will a balancer off of a 304 work, or is it displacment specicic?

I know the flywheels are balanced differently for a 304 vs a 306. I would assume that the harmonic balances are the same. But I'm not sure.

    Balancers are engine specific.

I got my new balancer the other and the install has not been going smoothly at all. No matter what do I can not get the the balancer to go all on the way on the front of the crank. It has almost an inch to go before it get it will be back all the way in and seal it's self against the oil seal. I pulled it once and notced the crank was gougeing out the inside of the balancer, so I polished out the gouges as best I could then tried to put it back on but I'm still not having any luck.
Anybody have any suggestions at all.

    Thanks,

    Donald.

In the past, I've had trouble installing a "new" harmonic balancer. I ended up using a 1 1/2" ball hone to hone the balancer bore. Hone a little, try it, hone a little more, try it again, until it goes on with a little persuasion from a balancer installation tool. You DON'T want to overhone it!

Welll guys I got installed and I'm sure the hole that the hole that was bored into it was not right. I ended up having to remove a few thousands off the balancer where the crank was digging into the balancer then after I did I was able to run it on with a little resistence. So hopefully it will all work out.

Thank's for the advice again folks.
