Steering shaft ?

I know i have been told that borgeson and flaming river are the holy grails of steering shafts but has anybody used the rugged ridge steering shaft or have any comments about it, I am upgrading to power steering off of a 84 cj7 and trying to decide which one to buy?

 

i cant tell you anything about the flaming river or RR but i used the borgeson and it is great. i purchased the one that was designated as off road only because it does not have a vibration dapner in it and i do not have many complaints about it other than i should have painted it cause it was starting to m spot rust. it was also a real sob getting the splines onto the gearbox. i had to beat it on with a bfh. and yes i had the right spline count and size. New shaft new gearbox new pump and it drives like a dream. I did not realize a jeep coud be so tight and responsive.

 

I used the Borgeson as well couldn't be any happier with it. Just like Roadhog it took a little persuasion to get on the splines on the box but has been great.

 

If you still have the stock steering column and shaft you can reuse the steering shaft, you just have to change the bell coupler also if you are doing this swap on a intermediate CJ have to use a pitman arm for a 72-75 CJ with power steering.

 

The upper joint frequently wears out on these. Iirc they are part of the shaft and can't easily be replaced if worn. That's where the aftermarket shafts shine as they use much better joints top and bottom.

it was the lower shaft on mine that was shot. the upper is a greasable u joint and mine was good and tight.

 

I might be thinking of the later CJ's. They had sort of a stamped "u" with a block that was non greaseable. Now that you mention it, I do remember the Intermediates being a greaseable ujoint. My humbling for the day....rotflmao

 

Correct. I have a new u joint i bought to install it when i begin rebuilding my 73's steering system.

 

Thanks for all the feedback and yes my steering shaft has the joint on the upper end but it has slack in it, so the cost of the new lower bell to fit the cj7 box and the joint for the upper end I would be able to purchase the rugged ridge shaft with a joint on both ends for 20 more dollars. I have been happy with all of rugged ridges products so far in my build were working on everything has been really heavy duty, so I think I'm going to give there steering shaft a try and I will let everyone know when it comes in.
