Replacement rear cross-member(bumper) from kaiserwillys

    timgr, thanks for the reply. I can always count on good info here. Just curious,,,,, why are they so off-set?

    I think it is because that is where the license plate originally went. You can line the plate up under the tail light which has a clear window on the bottom for a license plate light.

    Does it give a little extra room for the exhaust tailpipe out the right rear?

    Yes, it's shorter on the right side for the tailpipe

    Looks just right. I got the same bumper from KaiserWillys. Some of the holes did not line up so I had to drill them out. It took some rubber mallet work to get it on but it looks good.

    interesting, I always assumed it was just for the license plate because on the model years with the rear fuel tank the exhaust comes out on the left anyway. I think the engineers for kaiser got lazy when AMC bought them out. I learn something new everyday on this forum.

    Hard to say if it was lazy or just expedient. I expect the great redesign in 1976 was anticipated for many years, and they may have changed just enough for 1972 to get the engines in and provide the power options.
