Mirrors for use with Meyers hardtop

The mirrors that are currently on my hardtop are universal, west coast style that a PO had mounted to the doors. They work fine--when the doors are on--which won't be the case a lot in the summertime. Does anyone know if someplace supplies something like this that were available with the camper?



...or if anyone here has a pair for sale? Yeah, they stick out a ways, but I'm OK with that, especially for seeing out the passenger side. If not, I'm thinking maybe I can use conduit to make them...what kind of mirrors are you guys with hardtops using? When the softop was on, it had late 70's style CJ mirrors, but I'm not really a fan of those, especially the passenger side--I want to look out the side window into the mirror rather than through the windshield.

I finished painting the top and now I'm working on my doors...when I took the doors off was when I realized my mirror situation!

I used the post 75 style mirrors. you get used to looking out the windshield.

unsure how you would be able to look out the pass window to use the mirrior AND be able to use them sans doors.

 

I have the standard JEEP mirrors on mine.
This picture does not show them with the hard top on.

I'd think those mirrors on long arms would be excessively jiggly. The short ones bounce around enough, without adding the super-long arms.

 

I just use stock mirrors mounted to lower windshield hinge - looking through passenger side windshield for right side , with or without doors . I think the old ones don't jiggle like some of the ones you buy now

 

The post 1975 mirrors are what I would go with if I actually wanted to use them to see things behind me. The early type are useless as they are too small and shake too much.

 

I had the square one that mount on the cab for door less driving.
and the little round hinge mounted one with the doors
mine worked fine.
they didn't vibrate too much.

i didnt use any pass side ones
i just look over my shoulder.

 

Thanks for the replies. I reinstalled the 75+ style mirrors. You all are right about the vibration thing. The west coast style mirrors that were mounted directly to the doors worked great and vibrated very little. Eventually I would like to modify some of those style mirrors to mount to the body or possibly to the winshield frame. Having more than one strut or support really makes a difference in the amount of vibration.

 

How did you guys use the '75 and later mirrors and fit it up to the wiper motor cover ?

 

They dont attach to the wiper motor cover, they bolt on to the windshield hinge.

 

I used the 1960 windshield that came with the hardtop. The wipers are mounted on top so it wasn't an issue in my case. BTW, do you really think the tin tops are ugly? They seem to have a love/hate following. I met a guy the other day who bought a new CJ in 1969 with a dealer installed hardtop....he said he took it off because it echoed! It was brand new!! Now that I've weathersealed mine, I admit, it does echo a bit, but the pros far outweigh the cons. I'm thinking of adding some sound deadening material to the inside.

 

Well, what happened is the P.O. mounted the upper door hinge to the windshield hinge in such a way that the windshield hinge is under the wiper motor cover. I suspect the the WS hinges are from a later model.

Yeah,these tops are heavy and with a cage , even more so.
