I replaced the olsd speedometer with a new one. It works very errraticly. I am thinking that when the old one froze up it may have damaged the driven speedo-cable gear. Is there a way to pull this gear out and inspect it w/o tearing the tranny down? T18 tranny

I would check out the cable first, make sure it is good and lubed properly.

Yup, check the cable first. The speedo drive gears are in the rear output of the transfer case, not the transmission.

And the speedo drive gear just un-screws from the back of the transfer case. No other dis-assembly required. Eliminate any charp bends or kinks in the cable and as said to clean and lube the speedo cable core.

New Speeometer, new cable. Will lube the cable up today when I monk with it.. So I can just unscrew the gear. I'll give it a try. My theory is that the gear stripped or is spinning on the shaft..

Actually the speedo driven gear is easily removed by removing the threaded housing. The drive gear is sandwiched by the rear output shaft and rear bearing.

Update. I removed the driven gear and it is made totally of metal. Not stripped, looks good. I liberally greased the cable and re-installed it, tried turning the cable with my battery drill.. Wife said the speedo is jumping around a bit. Hooked everything back up and took a spin. three blocks and the speedo won't read above 5mph. Next step is to remove the speedo and test it on the bench to see if I can fix this "new" speedo.
