HEI old topic, new question

I have recieved my HEI dist from mruta and is there anything other than having to get 8mm hei wires and following the instructions from cape conversions that i should know about?? thanks in advance

 

Should drop right in. Besides the new wires, you can gap the plugs to about .045. IIRC some even go wider than that.

As for the timing, I just put my HEI back in Monday night and it seems to run good at 10* advance at idle. I did not put an adjustable vacuum advance on it or new centrifugal advance weights.

 

Joe, just remember if your motor starts to run to warm that to much total advance will cause this problem.

 

Some of us have had a little trouble getting the distributor to seat all the way down. This despite the trimming of the intake manifold and bolt replacement. I never figured why mine was so balky, but after several tries it went in. The beauty is you may never have to fool with it again! Read and follow Capes directions carefully. They work.

I installed an HEI with my 1982 231EF in my 71 CJ5. I had to use a allen head intake manifold bolt under the HEI to get it to fit. The salesman at the parts store where I purchased the HEI distributor suggested that I replace the original wire that connected to the distributor with a larger gauge, at least 12 gauge. The original wire seemed to be a 12 gauge so I didn't change it, however the first time I fired up the engine I noticed the resister on the firewall smoking so I removed it. I set the timeing to 14 BTDC. I haven't had it on the road yet but it seems to run very well.

 

Does anyone have a copy of the instructions from Capes? I bought my HEI off Ebay.
