sorry for the flurry of Q's

of late, i can start my jeep and it runs fine for about 5 minutes
and then it just dies like s.o. turned off the ignition switch
i wait a few minutes and it starts right back up again!!

i've installed a new coil and fuel pump
and am now about ready to install the new HEI distr.

what does this sound like to you guys?

Remove the fuel tank cap, and see if it will keep running.

That's a common way that the factory Prestolite ignition modules fail. Engine just stops while you are driving along. You pull off the road, open the hood, look around, close the hood, get in the Jeep and drive off.

I believe all of the HEI upgrade links as related to a '75 tell us to eliminate the factory ignition module.

    looking at the picture above
which wire would be used to
supply keyed 12 volts to the new HEI distr?

Why don't you use the coil wire?

i thot the coil wire came from the ignition module
    and had resistance in it
does the wire running to the ignition module
go right by the coil on the R side of the engine by the valve cover?

Do you have the factory manual? If you don't, you should buy the reprint. Look at the wiring diagram. The red power wire comes from the ignition switch and goes to the coil, then to the module. It's the same wire. No resistor.

For only this circuit, the '76 wiring is the same as '75. http://oljeep.com/gw/76_tsm/Section22.pdf

I'd suggest you also get a multimeter and learn to use it. It will be very helpful figuring out electrical issues.

here is a picture of the wiring at the coil/distributor
your right, the red/wht wire goes to the coil and the ign module
the blue and green wire (and red/wht wire) come back to the coil/distributor

so what i need to do is disconnect all the wires that go to the ign module
(not the ones to the solenoid!)
and use this red/wht wire to the batt lead on the HEI?

    thank for all your help
    dave

Just unplug the module and remove it. Tape up the empty socket, or remove the wires back to the coil connection and distributor, your choice. Power your distributor from the red wire with the white trace (stripe). I don't see any connection to the solenoid.

the big heavy (6-8G) Solid red wire
is also in with the other wires
but is in the back and one just can't see them
these would be the battery to switch wire
and the ammeter wire no doubt
    thanks

You mean there are other wires in the loom? (corrugated plastic tube that guides the wires) Don't mess with those.

    Your link does not work.

1974 and 1975 are not the same wiring diagram.

There is no ballast resistor on a '75. And HEI does not use one.
