After I remove the lock plate, what is holding the counter shaft? It's not budging with a hammer and drift. I'm getting ready to set it up in my hydrolic press and just push it out.

    I'm following the directions from:

How big a hammer? If you have a press use that if a 3lb hammer won't move it.

One more thought...are you "holding" the trans so that it is absorbing your blows? Maybe have someone pin it against a wall?

Whacking it with a bigger hammer worked. I'll probably keep adding to this thread as I can tell I'll have several more questions as I work through this rebuild.

At this point I'm supposed to be able to remove the main drive gear, but the oil collector doesn't move fare enough out of the way.

    Any ideas?

Ok I'm learning that you can't just follow one description of the process. I needed to remove the smaller of the two snap rings to drive the main drive gear back into the case until the oil collector is free.

Cluster gear out. I guess not bad for 50 years of abuse and neglect.
