Correct me if I am wrong, but would the low range rod be the outboard rod?

What is this telling me...When it's in 2H the front drive shaft will turn freely with my hand. In the other positions (4H/4L) it is locked in tight. Does that not indicate that the xfer case is shifting out of neutral?

That's on the list for Saturday. I did not realize that gear would come off without assistance. It's been several years since I have has the xfer case open so anything is possible I guess. Thanks much.

I meant high/low rod, but yes it's the outboard rod. Your description indicates it is indeed shifting out of neutral. Sounds like checking the gear is next.

Well - thanks to all. It was the drive gear in the xfer case. It had come off the shaft - even with a nylock nut. I guess I use come loctite this time. BTW, I have been using the fiber gaskets on the xfer case access/inspection plates. I don't have any on hand and do not want to wait a week for them to come in. Will Ultra Black work instead?

If it's just a cover plate, black RTV will be fine.

Sucks that it happened but at least it's an easy fix. Can't help but wonder when it actually came off though. Weird.

Driving under power and then sudden loss of power due coil break down. I can see that causing the bull gear to slide back.

Knocking on wood - she's back on the road and seems none the worse for wear. Thanks to all.

    BTW - Merry Christmas.
