recycle a top

so an intermediate cj5 renegade came in to the local junkyard...the jeep is toast. but surprisingly...the soft top is decent. its a little stretched but apart from the windows needing replaced its useable. so ...2 questions,
1. can just the windows be replaced?
2. can the vinyl be stretched?

 

There have been threads about window replacement before. Yes. Look for an upholstery shop that does boat canopies.

Stretched? Usually you have to stretch the top to get it to fit. Install in full sun on a hot day.

Get everything you can - there are a lot of little pieces of hardware in the kits.

 

ok so i should go get the soft top regaurdless?

 

the windshield frame is narrower at the top for a intermediate . if its 76 and older . 75 and earlier it would fit . yes get all the hardware . install on a hot sunny day
the other question about windows don't really know . like tim said check a boat shop

 

unless the windows are cracked, you can probably save them. if they're really cloudy use liquid metal polish, but mine clean up really good with window washer fluid. Marine cleaner/wax works really really good in my experience, i just ran out.

 

Right idea - wrong terminology. An intermediate has the same windshield shape as an early. Intermediates are 1972 through '75.

The windshield changes for the 1976 model year.

 

Get it if you want it... replacing the windows won't be free, but it should be a lot less than a new top.

 

I want a soft top... so I guess ill have a hard look. The jeep is a 74 v8 renegade. Levis and 5 slot mags. Btw what do a set of those 5 slots go for?

 

Even if you don't use the Windows it can make a nice safari type top.

 

Quick check - On a '74, the proper windshield will have the motor on the outside of the windshield. If the motor is on the inside, it's been changed to a '76 or later style, and its top won't fit an early Jeep.

 

If it is an original Whitco top and you can get it cheap buy it. You can probably sell it for more. I would be interested.
