Success!! Got it fixed and set the timing to 5 degrees BTC with a timing light. It's running GREAT! There is a long, steep on-ramp to a highway near my house. I powered up that thing like never before...even passed a truck! And I didn't hear any pinging whatsoever. I definitely noticed a significant difference. How much of this is attributable to the Pertronix kit, and how much to the fact that my points may have been worn or needed gapped (come to think of it, I haven't even inspected them after removing them) and my timing being off I don't know. But I don't care either!! She's running like a top! Oh and, by the way, I never flipped the magnetic ring around but I did switch over to the 2-pronged holddown. Next job is new cap, rotor, plugs and wires...Thanks everyone!

I know you're right, but I'm in love and I just can't keep my hands off the old girl :)

Installed one of these in my 1967 CJ5 with the 225 V6 this last weekend -- thanks for the tip about which way the magnet ring goes, I didn't even have to loosen the distributor hold-down and it started on the first crank! :)

What type and model # distributor do you guys have? I have a prescolite and Pertronix doesn't make a kit for it. I heard I need a delco unit but don't know which one works with an odd-fire. My cj-5 is a '70 with the V6 engine and I was thinking of putting a HEi off a 75 buick but don't want to have to grind the intake.

Just get a Delco points style distributor for a :v6:
I got a remain unit cheap from NAPA, & put the Pertrinix kit in it.

Rock Auto has some reman units available...search for part # D231 or # 1110376
You can also place a WTB ad and grab a used one from a member here.

Thanks for the info. Rock auto doesn't list it for a 1970 though, only a 1968 & '67. I got another reply that gave me a delco # 1110322 p/n. which is for a '66. They both look the same. Does anyone know if they will both fit in my 1970.

'70-'71, some ,'69 used the Prestolite. Earlier Dauntless V-6 used the Delco. They easily interchange, just a different supplier for those years. Get a Delco for '66-early '69 and you will be fine.
