Looking for opinions here. I have a 1967 CJ6 that I'm very proud of. When I purchased it, the PO said it was used mostly for parades, 4th of July and such since it was made to look like a M715 military ambulance. It had "Willys" painted on the tail gate. I've since changed the paint scheme, should I put the "Willys" back on the tailgate?

    Thanks for the honesty!

If your plan is to make it original, then place only that which was there to begin with. My .02.

So a '67 would have had "Willys" on the tailgate right in the center?
what about the "4 wheel drive" located to the right of the tailgate?

I do not believe the 67 year had the Willys embossed on the rear. It was total Kaiser then if i remember correctly. I think 62 was the last year of the willys emboss on the tailgate. The 4 wheel drive logo was on the lower rightside for that year.

Yep, if it had Willys on it originally it would have been stamped not painted!

Willys Overland sold out to Kaiser - Frazer in 1953.
The Jeeps continued under the name of Willys Motors Incorporated through all of 1963.
They began to implement body stamping changes early in 1964.
That implies the omission of the "Willys" stamped body parts.
By mid 1964 they began to go to the 8100 series of serial plate numbers.
When the serial number plate was changed the last vestige of Willys was now gone.
Technically speaking any CJ with 8100 series serial number is a Kaiser Jeep and not a Willys Jeep.
Kaiser Jeep Corporation was sold to American Motors in March of 1970.

My 66 does not have anything stamped in the tailgate either. It does have the 4Wheel Drive logo painted on however.

" it was made to look like a M715 military ambulance"

Sure he didn't mean M170? The M715 was a 1-1/4 ton Kaiser truck.

Just my input a 1963 CJ5 does not have Willys on the tailgate - it is blank. My 61 did have that stamped on the tailgate.

I have never seen a Jeep in person that had the "4 Wheel drive" painted on it but I have seen many references to it. I know for certain that the CJ6 my grandfather bought in the early 60's did not have that painted on it ever. We have pictures of the Jeep the day it was bought and my uncle still owns it. The Jeep has never been repainted all these years - in fact is still completely original with no modifications at all

Thank for the input and knowledge once again, and yes PeteL, I did mean the M170.

I did end up putting a Willys embossed tailgate on my old 63 CJ5. I just liked the embossed look, the plain center didnt look good :(

On my '60 the po welded the tire carrier to the tailgate after ripping it off the passenger side against a tree or rock formation somewhere.

My CJ5 Jeep title says it is a 1964. The data tag says Willis. Serial number starts with 83. . 4-Wheel Drive is painted on left side of tailgate.
I was told that it was the last year for Willis when I purchased it. Also, was told that it was restored to original configuration except the wheels and tires. I am new to Jeeps so, do not know if that is true or not. I sure enjoy having and driving it.
