The pilot bushing is not closed on one end. You may have packed dirt/grease in the hole which will not allow mating. The end of the input gear that goes into the pilot bushing should extend about 3/8" beyond the bell-housing. Did you change to a different transmission and if so is the end of the shaft (where pilot fits) the same dia.?

I got one of Herm's rebuilds. I had a T86 with gear issues so that's why the shaft is different from what I took off. The old shaft slides in very nicely. Just to try and narrow it down I took off the throwout and fork so there is nothing inside the bellhousing that could contact anything on the flywheel and still have the same issue. It doesn't appear to be dirt or grease in there, it really looks like the pilot bushing that's already installed has a closed end.

Here is what I'm looking at inside the pilot bushing
    [IMG]

Here is the difference in the shaft's , the longer one is the new one.

That new shaft is 1/2 inch longer that the old one, and that is what I come up short trying to mate the tranny with the engine.

What is that behind the pilot bushing?

And yes Walt, the shaft does extend exactly 3/8" just like you said it should.

From your picture it looks like the shaft with the longer shank is larger than the shorter one? That would stop you for sure.

No, it's the same size. It goes in, it just won't go in far enough.

Are you absolutely sure the bell is lined up and going over the two dowels in the block? Some times that is a tight fit and needs a slight tap with rubber hammer to seat the bell over the dowels.

The crank face is behind the pilot bearing.

Can you get it in fast enough to put some rtv on the end of the shaft and see if it sticks on the crank past the pilot bearing? That will tell you if your hitting - try without the clutch in if needed.

I was finally able to get back to the Jeep. Lots of other obligations have been tying me up. I think I have the clutch fork & throw out bearing in the correct location now and holding. Now I'm trying to get the engine back in - again. I've been pushing and adjusting and grunting and cussing for two hours and I can't find the sweet spot. So fed up! I'm a one man show so I've been turn the crank wee amounts trying to get the splines to mesh.

Follow up: I did finally get the engine back in with the clutch fork in the correct position. The new to me Buick 225 V6 seems to be running fine. These type of things never seem to go easy for me, but it's done now. My eyes and ideas are typically wider than my abilities. Thank you everyone that chimed in to help me get the engine and the clutch all back together.

We went to Ocotillo Wells for a bit of a shake down. No one along with us to get pictures of the Willys in action, but my wife took a little video of us in the mandatory doughnut hole visit.
