Ok, I know that this may not be the place to post this, but I looked at the "transport" section and was not sure if I was going to get any response based on the age of the threads there.

I'm expecting this post to be moved to the correct section and then I'll know where to follow up with it.

Anyway, looking at buying a jeep out of state but have no idea about transporting it. Has any one ever done this before? Ilhow do I find information on this?

    Thank you

I have shipped a couple vehicles from Washington and California. Like Twin2 said, google transport and you will find a few sites that offer 10 different quotes from individual companies. Some of these are brokers and other are independent. The quotes are handy to see the range of prices. Of course you will have these guys calling and emailing you.

All of them are likely insured and you can get open or closed transport.

    Good luck with the transporting.

With so many internet sales the transporters are pretty competitive. It has been about 4 years but I paid around $550 to ship a CJ5A from Upland, CA to The Colony (north of Dallas). That was door to door. It has probably gone up a little but at that is ball park.

For what it's worth I shipped a '67 CJ5 from Denver to my town in Ohio earlier this summer. It cost about $800. I considered everything else from a UHaul truck to going and getting it myself but shipping was cheaper or close to the cost of any other way. A couple things I learned in the process is you can get a better deal if you deal directly with a shipper, if you go through a broker they are simply going to contract the work to a shipper and take a cut of the proceeds. Also I got a better rate by moving the vehicle myself from the small town it was in to Denver where it was easier to pickup (ie the shipper didn't have to route through the town it was in to get it). If that is a possibily for you you might want to get quotes based on both scenario's. For me the difference in the quote was $800, Denver to home, $1300 from the town it was in to my home.

Ditto the other guys on the calls and emails. It's a very competitive business and if you put it out there you will be swamped with calls and emails. Most of them will be brokers and they tend to be relentless. If you are picking it up anywhere around a major sized city I would suggest checking to see if there is a vehicle shipping company located there and contact them directly, I had a chance to talk to the guys that worked at the company that eventually transported the vehicle I bought and they filled me in on how things work in the business.

    Anything else, ask.

Thanks Tom, that is some very good advice to consider. I've been getting some quote with $200-$400 price differences so I can see the brokers fee added to the quote. Thanks again.
